Adnan KAPLAN Şerif HEPCAN Bülent ÖZKAN Erhan KÜÇÜKERBAŞ Emine M. YİĞİT Hatice S. TÜREL Ege University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Landscape Architecture İzmir - TÜRKİYE (TURKEY)

2 WHAT IS PUBLIC SPACE NETWORK?
Each of urban public spaces along with existing or potential greenways should be seen as a complementary part of a public space network in a given landscape context, particularly by taking into account pedestrian requirements as a major prerequisite.

3 WHY MASTER PLANNING? A planning approach is required in order to guide future physical development in the context of urban public spaces and greenways. Master planning is hereby an analytical and creative activity resulting in a coordinated set of decisions (the plan) about the actions to accomplish stated goals. This study is the first example in Turkey that Muğla municipality requested a comprehensive master planning pursuit from the Department of Landscape Architecture, Ege (Aegean) University in 2001.

19 MASTER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES
Policy An integrated approach of planning and management The pedestrian friendly policies Open space preservation through land acquisition A proposed buffer zone with the purpose of protecting agricultural areas Planning, design and management Managing socio-economic life of the city in relation with its physical layout A new urban precinct in support of greenways Vacant lots, designated as ‘proposed green areas’ over the urban development plan

20 MASTER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES
Transportation Public transportation has to be strengthened through environment-friendly investments. For instance, a tram route along the proposed greenway Enlargement of sidewalks and establishment of bicycle lanes Some vehicular roads leading to historic district should be allocated to partly or non-motorized pedestrian access

21 C O N C L U S I O N a sound public space network in order to attract tourists and to further develop new economic investments greenway topic should address overwhelmingly the course of urban development plan and physical structure of urban domain in a legislative way the master planning approach, as a systematic and comprehensive way to analyze and guide the urban public open spaces and greenways as a whole an autonomous master planning unit within the body of the local government should be established for implementation and management master plan outputs should be divided into a set of implementation projects for municipal pursuits
