Almost 10% of Spanish is Arabic
The north African Arabs conquered Spain for almost 1,000 years, from CE until 1492. Many foods we eat came from them: almonds, white sugar, rice, oranges, apricots, asparagus, and many more. Words that begin with –a or -al in Spanish are actually Arabic: almendra (almond) azucar (sugar) arroz (rice) and even algebra.

Flamenco music and dance
First mentioned in literature in 1774, Flamenco is often associated with the Romani people of Spain (Gitanos); some call them gypsies. Although it is actually thought to have evolved from a wide variety of cultures including Punjabi singing of India, Jewish Synagogue Chants and Western African colonies. The compas and the palmeras keep the beat. Most other instruments and dance are improvisational, or made up on the spot.
