Main Idea: Napoleon Bonaparte, a military genius, seized power in France and made himself Emperor. Why It Matters Now: In times of political turmoil, military dictators often seize control of nations.

Background: From Corsica ( French Occupied) Short Man (5’6”)
Genius (Too smart for his own good!) picked on by peers (He was a small kid and shy) Went to Military school: 9 yrs. old (average student) Graduated at 16 and became an officer leading an artillery unit Planed to use his military training to remove French from Corsica Napoleon rose to power in France in just 4 years ( ) He would become one of the greatest military leaders in history

Hero of the Hour: Joined the Army during the French Revolution Defended Paris against “Royalists” People who supported the King Became famous Won many victories in Italy, Austria, and Sardinia Lost huge battles in Egypt to the British Made sure these didn’t make it to the papers in France! New govt. (Directory) was not working in 1799 Returned to Paris Surrounds National Legislature with his army Coup d’Etat- Quick military takeover Runs off most of the members Those who remained dissolve directory

Constitution provides 3 Consuls Whoever held 1st Consul was a dictator and ruled over other 2 Napoleon was the “1st Consul” - dictator (total rule) France still at war Signed peace treaties with warring countries 1802 – peace in Europe for first time in 10 years Napoleon can now focus on “fixing” France
