1 UMBC’S ALTERNATE DELIVERY PROGRAM: SUPPORTING HYBRID COURSE REDESIGN

2 BACKGROUND ON UMBC Enrollment: Approximately 10K Undergrad/ 3K Grad Course Offerings for Fall 2010: Total # for FA2010 Undergraduate Graduate Courses Approx 2500 total Online 6 courses 23 courses Hybrid 25 courses 14 courses

3 History of Alternate Delivery Program (ADP)
Started in 2005 for Summer/ Winter sessions Initially targeted high demand courses, Gen Ed courses, and courses suited to hybrid format Expanded in 2009 for Fall/ Spring semesters Increasing room shortage at peak times Targeting faculty teaching seat courses Requires 50% F2F, 50% online

4 PROGRAM GOALS Provide realistic outlook on what it will take to convert course to hybrid format Provide assistance with available technology Provide opportunity for feedback from peers Create network of “hybrid” faculty for support and feedback

6 FIRST STEPS FOR FACULTY
Self-Enroll in Hybrid Course Design Bb Organization Complete Doodle polls for presentation dates Submit letter of support from Dept. Chair Post thread announcing completion of these tasks on ADP Requirements Discussion Board

7 Next STeps Complete & Post “10 Hybrid Planning Questions”
Adapted from Univ. Wisconsin, Milwaukee’s excellent “Ten Questions for Course Redesign” and support site ( Survey of current Bb skills Allows reflection on course learning goals, and impact of moving course to hybrid format Arrange for F2F interview with ITNM Staff

8 INTERVIEW PROCESS Opportunity to discuss specific issues faculty will face in course and suggest possible solutions Helps focus faculty on specific activities that they can develop for their 2 required “deliverables” Provides faculty with early feedback in case of foreseeable problems

9 POST INTERVIEW Review presentations by past participants in ADP
Use DB to reflect on what techniques they would/would not use and why Develop deliverables and place on Hybrid Course Practice Bb Community Enroll a student and a colleague and request feedback at least one week prior to presentation

10 PRESENTATION OF DELIVERABLES
“10 minutes of fame” 1 minute posing pedagogical problem 1 minute showing how deliverable solved problem 1 minute discussing student/peer feedback 2 minutes describing next steps 5 minutes for Q & A Presentations are open to entire campus; we encourage Administrators, ADP alumni to attend

11 STIPEND! Once the course is taught in hybrid format, the faculty member receives a $2500 stipend

12 EVALUATION ADP participants are asked to evaluate the program
Survey on Bb Students in Summer/ Winter sessions are given a survey on their experience in hybrid course Student surveys published on ADP website

13 FUTURE PLANS: Offer a version of the 1-day Hybrid Workshop online
Adjust timing of ADP program to better fit with UMBC course proposal timeline
