Onomatopoeia word/s that imitate the sound they represent. BANG! SPLASH! AAAARRRGHHHH!

3 What sounds (onomatopoeia) related to horror can you think of?
Work in pairs to think of words. Then use your mats to add more ideas. Next look at the worksheet and discuss any sounds you are not sure of. E.g. howl hoot scream

Look at the list of words we have created. Write down four words in each category below. Challenge – choose a word from each category and write it in a sentence. Words to describe the sound a girl/boy could make when scared. Words to describe the sound a creature (e.g. zombie, ghost, vampire, owl, bat) could make. Words to describe the sound a door closing or window breaking could make. Words to describe the sound the wind/rain/weather could make.

Writers often use onomatopoeia (sounds) in sentences to make their writing more interesting and help the reader imagine the scene. E.g. I could hear a loud squawk from the eagle. A scary shriek came from upstairs.

8 Now add in some onomatopoeia.
A dagger __________to the floor. A beast __________in delight. A man ___________with fear. The wind_________through the trees. The doorbell went __________. The evil man____________. The girl ________when she saw the ghost. The killer___________as he killed the beast. I could hear the rain___________on the floor. I could hear the door__________shut. Her heart was_________.

Now write two sentences including sounds (onomatopoeia)with a partner. Challenge – start your sentences with a preposition. E.g. In the dark trees, an owl hooted. E.g. Under the bed, a monster growled. 1_________________________________________ 2_________________________________________
