1 Year 9 Subject Selection – Body at War

2 Course Description The body at war is based on the Biology of how the body fights disease. We first look at the range of disease causing agents and then the first, second and third lines of defence that help prevent and protect us from disease. Students investigate what happens when their immune system fails and how medicine has advanced to assist in treating disease.

Practical work involving the growing of microbes under controlled conditions. Effect of disinfectants on bacterial growth. Various worksheets Research of topics eg. a particular disease, autoimmune disease. Practical reports on microbe hotspots around school, effect of disinfectants on bacterial growth. Research report on a disease and autoimmune disease. Unit test

4 Subject pathway…. The Body at War will lead into Year 10 Biology or possibly to accelerated VCE Biology. This can then lead to tertiary studies in some of the following areas: Biological and agricultural sciences Sport sciences Environmental and ecological sciences Medicine Biotechnology
