LEADERSHIP and PARTICIPATION
Leadership Skills may be developed by observing what goes on in groups identifying clearly the main needs of groups learning ways of dealing with these needs practicing these skills in many different situations taking people’s feeling seriously listening to feedback about other’s reactions to their own behavior as a leader making changes to their behavior so that people will respond in a positive way to them
12
It takes sensitivity, humility, and love to develop leadership skills.
And it takes a number of years of practice, too.

The Animator/Facilitator/Coordinator
14
Styles of Group Leadership:
Authoritarian Consultative Enabling
15
Authoritarian Leadership:
May be necessary at times of danger May be needed when a group is struggling for survival Does not foster initiative, creativity or responsibility in the members of the group Tends to make people act as obedient robots which do not think for themselves Makes people with initiative and creativity to rebel
16
Collective Leadership:
is a leadership made by a group of persons not by one person alone or by some persons in the group.
17
study questions jointly find their best solutions
To lead collectively in a group is to: study questions jointly find their best solutions take decisions jointly benefit from the experience and intelligence of each person give the opportunity of thinking and acting
18
demand that people take responsibility within their competence
require that people take initiative coordinate the thought and action of those form the group derive the greatest return in the accomplishment of the group’s tasks within the limits of their competence and in the framework of the activities and the interests of the organization.
19
The Facilitator Provides a process which will help the group discuss their own content in the most satisfactory and positive way possible. Concerns himself with the process, not at all with the content. Ensures that there is good communication in the group and that all members are satisfied with and fully committed to the decisions taken.
20
The Animator Needs all the skills of a facilitator but has a special responsibility to stimulate people: To think critically To identify problems To find solutions Needs to enable the group to understand the problem and deal with it constructively.
21
The animator provides a process in which people can:
share their concerns/information/opinion set goals make decisions plan actions
22
The Coordinator Draws together people, action and events in such a way that they support and strengthen each other. There needs to be coordination within each program and coordination between each program.

Stranded in the Mountains
Cover Story It was a clear day in December when your group decided to give yourselves a rest after the 3-day training in Baguio. Accompanied by a guide, several of you decided to go horse back riding up the mountains in order to see as much of the mountain as possible. Your group was already on trail at 10:00 AM. Your group went through the thickly forested areas finally reached the peak at 2:00 PM. Your guide said you should only stay for 30 minutes so you could be back at the Teachers’ Camp before sundown. You let your horses graze in a small clearing while you ate your packed lunches and looked at the scenery. Everyone was so busy eating and gazing at the scenery that no one noticed a big
25
boa constrictor slither into the far end of the clearing
boa constrictor slither into the far end of the clearing. The snake’s presence startled the horses and before you knew it, all of them were bucking and bolting. Your guide happened to be near the horses but as he turned around to see what was happening, one of the horses knocked him down as they started to flee. He fell to the ground and hit his head on a rock. While some of you rushed to assist him, a couple of you ran to grab the leashes of the last two remaining horses that had also started to bolt … but too late! The realization hit all of you at the same time – you’re now stranded in the forest somewhere in the mountains of Baguio, with an unconscious guide, no means of transportation, and with the only possessions that you happened to take out of your saddlebags when you stopped for lunch.
26
You know that the four-hour ride on horseback would probably take you eight hours on foot to go back to the Teachers’ Camp. When your group does not show up for the 7:00 PM dinner, you will be missed. Your DLL staff know of your trip to the mountains but they do not know your exact whereabouts. The area around you is extremely rugged, with steep embarkments, rugged cliffs and dense forest. You can’t see the water source but you think you can hear a faint sound of water. Everyone is dressed in light clothing. You noticed that the sky has clouded over and it has become tremendously cold. You recalled the guide mentioning how quick the weather changes in the mountains. You’re almost certain that you saw some rain clouds not too far away.
27
The Problem Your group was not able to get any equipment off the horses before they bolted, so you can only have items that you took from your saddlebags. You guide appears to be gravely injured and has not regained consciousness. You have no idea whether the boa constrictor is still in the area. And to top it all, it looks like you’re going to be caught in a thunderstorm!
28
Your Position Group members need to stay together and do either the following: Stay put and wait to be rescued, or Hike down the mountains
29
Your Tasks Together with other members of the group, do the following tasks: Decide which position you will take Justify your decision Write down the best procedure for carrying out your position. Select the six possessions from the list that you think are the most important for implementing your plan. Rank these six items according to their importance to your plan; starting with “1” for the most important.
