1 Syrian Refugee Resettlement Programme Phase 1 Lessons Learnt
Presented by: Jeannette Henderson Date: 25 February 2016 OFFICIAL

2 Background – Syrian VPR
Launched in January first resettlement programme to target support for refugees specifically on the basis of their vulnerability. On 7 September 2015 PM announced it would be expanded to resettle up to 20,000 Syrians in need of protection in this Parliament. Increase in numbers will require an expansion of current networks and the impact on local communities and infrastructure will need to be managed carefully. Overwhelmingly those that have arrived so far have been well received in the communities. Goodwill from local authorities and the private, non-governmental and voluntary sectors as well as from individuals across the UK. OFFICIAL

3 Lessons Learnt Improving pre-departure briefings and information
ensure those being resettled understand the process , have more information about the UK and the area they will live and the support they will receive. We are reviewing the Cultural Orientation process with the International Organisation for Migration who deliver Cultural Orientation in the region on our behalf. We are increasing the number of hours of orientation from 5 to 10 hours.

4 Lesson Learnt Understanding more about the needs of those being resettled. In phase 1 information was not always completely accurate or current In phase 2 will focus on Ensuring relevant information has been captured by UNCHR and IOM eg health, family size, understanding the needs of those being resettled before they arrive in the UK trying to match those being resettled with appropriate areas e.g. skills, rural/urban and family links.

5 Lessons Learnt A need for a joined-up approach involving local authorities, housing providers, the third sector, and community groups Pre-Christmas the Resettlement Programme worked directly with local authorities on individual cases for resettlement. Given the scalability issues our delivery model and engagement with delivery partners, needs to be more strategic and streamlined. Looking to establish a regional approach in phase 2 (more later!...) Exploring rolling out Community Sponsorship approach - build on offers of support to allow individuals, charities, faith groups, churches and businesses to support refugees directly
