1 Warm Up p11 Talk to the text you have in front of you. Using your knowledge of word stems, what can you infer is the difference between an epidemic and pandemic?

2 8.L.1 Understand the structure and hazards caused by agents of disease that effect living organisms. 8.L.1.2 Explain the difference between epidemic and pandemic as it relates to the spread, treatment and prevention of disease.

3 Acting as global risk analysts, students will work in groups to create a global map of pandemic risk based on close reading of texts from the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, TED talk and NC DPH Pandemic Influenza plan.

4 Activity Pandemic Text Analysis 11-13 Epidemic vs Pandemic 14
Date Session # Activity Page # 4/21-22,25 Pandemic Text Analysis 11-13 Epidemic vs Pandemic 14 Risk of the Emergence of a new disease Risk of Spread of a new disease Capacity to contain a new disease 15

5 Talk to the text questions, connections, what do you notice. Done
Talk to the text questions, connections, what do you notice? Done? Reread. You notice different things when you reread. What conclusions can you draw? What evidence do you see that helps you answer the questions below? How does a pandemic affect a society? What social conditions affect the spread of a pandemic?

6 How is the world at risk for a pandemic today
How is the world at risk for a pandemic today? Think about the factors that would increase each of the following: P 15 Risk of Emergence the risk of emergence of a new disease in a country/region Risk of Spread the risk of the spread of such a disease to and within that country. Ability to Contain the capacity of that country to contain an outbreak of disease.

7 Hover for vocab Talk to your text gist, questions, connections, what do you notice? Read & Reread!! How is the spread, treatment and prevention of a pandemic different than that of an epidemic?

11 The difference between epidemic & pandemic
Millions infected globally, unusually high rate of infection (Does not mean millions dead.) Can begin as an epidemic and then spread worldwide. For example: a flu strain can begin locally (epidemic) but eventually spread globally (pandemic). Frequently a new virus, people have not been exposed to the virus before, their immune systems are not ready to fight it off, and more people become ill. Examples: Bubonic Plague Influenza Influenza pandemics have occurred more than once. Spanish influenza killed million people in 1918. Asian influenza killed 2 million people in 1957. Hong Kong influenza killed 1 million people in 1968. Disease/illness shows up in more cases than would normally be expected. It spreads rapidly to many people. Confined to a particular city or region Examples: Malaria in Africa Yellow fever in southern US states in the 1800’s Cholera in Haiti

12 You work for a global risk analysis company
You work for a global risk analysis company. Your company analyzes social, environmental, economic and political risk factors. Corporations use this information to make business decisions. Your information helps them identify, manage and minimize global risks to their operations, supply chains and distribution networks. World wide charitable and human rights organizations use this same information to monitor areas of the world in which they work and offer aid.

13 Using the information you have gained from previous lessons as well as various texts your group will create a global map of pandemic risk based on one of the following components: Risk of Emergence – the risk of emergence of a new disease in a country/region Risk of Spread – the risk of the spread of such a disease to and within that country. Capacity to Contain – the capacity of that country to contain an outbreak of disease.

14 Your work must include A list of factors your group felt believed would increase the vulnerability of a country or region to your specific pandemic risk component Shaded global map showing areas of high, medium and low risk

15 Compare to an official risk analysis

16 TOTD Name, Block Summarize the difference between an epidemic and pandemic. Epidemiologists investigate the origin and spread of disease. Develop 3 important questions they need to ask when investigating the cause and spread of a new disease.
