1 Saved by Faith Means to Live by Faith
Galatians 2:11-21 Pastor Keone

2 Galatians 2: When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong. 12 Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

3 What was so special about Antioch? Acts 11:22-26
22 News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

5 Galatians 2: When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong.

6 The Problem At first Peter ate with the Gentile believers, but gradually stopped because he was afraid of the circumcision group. Other Jews followed Peter’s actions.

7 The Problem At first Peter ate with the Gentile believers, but gradually stopped because he was afraid of the circumcision group. Other Jews followed Peter’s actions. Peter’s actions implied that one needed to be circumcised to be considered a Christian. Peter knew better (Acts 10:9-40; 11:1-18)

8 Acts 10:28 28 He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.

9 Acts 11: "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" 18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."

10 Galatians 2:14 14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

11 Galatians 2: "We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' 16 know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

12 A person is justified by faith in Jesus

13 Galatians 2: "We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' 16 know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

17 Galatians 2: "If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker.

18 Charge: Since being justified by faith eliminated the law, sinful living is encouraged.
Paul’s response: May God forbid!! Going back to the law will just show that I am a law breaker

19 Galatians 2: For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

20 Galatians 2:19-20 19 For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I died to the law, but am alive to God

21 Galatians 2:19-20 19 For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I died to the law, but am alive to God I have been crucified with Christ

The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I died to the law, but am alive to God I have been crucified with Christ I no longer live, but Christ lives in me The life I live in the body, I live by faith in Christ

24 Galatians 2:21 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!“

25 Galatians 2:21 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!“ If salvation can be found through any other means, then Christ died for nothing.

26 Our response Have I been saved by faith through the grace of God? Am I rejoicing and walking in the liberty of grace? Am I willing to defend the truth of the Gospel? Am I “walking uprightly according to the truth of the Gospel”?
