1 Massachusetts THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Massachusetts in FY 2016 $447 Million: NSF funds awarded 3rd: National ranking in NSF funds 116: NSF-funded institutions 1,277: NSF grants awarded 25: NSF research centers/facilities “Innovation will continue despite the downturn and will be as important as ever once the recession ends.” − Dr. Richard K. Lester, Director of MIT’s Industrial Performance Center EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN MASSACHUSETTS Boston University is developing a physics-based space weather model to give advanced warnings of high speed streams of solar plasma and Earth-directed coronal mass ejections which threaten to disrupt space- and ground-based communications systems and satellite operations. MIT researchers have developed a way to use viruses to create the positive and negative charged ends of lithium ion batteries. These are the same batteries being considered for hybrid cars, but can be produced at a lower cost with less of an environmental impact. Researchers at Harvard University have been studying the role that emotions may have played on decision making in the wake of the economic downturn. This work may explain why classical economic theory failed to predict the recent economic crisis. Courtesy: INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN MASSACHUSETTS 6.9 percent of Massachusetts residents work in science and engineering occupations.1 Massachusetts universities awarded over 10,200 masters and doctorate degrees in science and engineering fields in NSF-funded research contributed to the generation of 4,850 patent awards in the state between 2000 and MIT, Harvard University, Boston University, and University of Massachusetts Medical School rank in the top 85 academic institutions nationally in research and development expenditures.1 Massachusetts has about 17,500 high technology businesses that employ 462,800 people.1 Massachusetts companies received $4.6 billion in venture capital in 1 Science and Engineering Indicators 2016 NSF 2 R&D Dashboard Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 

2 Massachusetts Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Massachusetts received $95 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN MASSACHUSETTS Faculty from Mt. Holyoke College and Hampshire College have mentored undergraduate students conducting Arctic climate change research at a site in Svalbard, Norway. Springfield Technical Community College developed an "at ease" learning community for disabled veterans highlighting that non-degree certification programs are a viable avenue for entry into STEM degree programs. The Education Development Center in Waltham, Massachusetts created a new resource for middle school teachers who want to learn about research-based ways to improve how students learn and apply geometry. A Harvard University researcher is developing new measures and insights to describe the educational achievement gap of minority groups. This research has led to innovative methods of evaluating and improving the educational performance of disadvantaged groups. Courtesy: “Massachusetts is #1 in educational attainment, and engineering degrees granted per capita compared with other leading technology states.” − Former Governor Deval L. Patrick “We must ensure that our schools and colleges prepare all students to be science-literate citizens and that they produce as well the biologists, chemists, physicists, engineers and others who will create the foundation for the next generation of scientific discovery.” − Dr. Drew Faust, President, Harvard University Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
