3. WHO WE ARE
EHTTA was created in 2009 in Brussels, and a year later was designated by the Council of Europe as a Cultural Route, one of just 33 across Europe.
EHTTA has nearly 40 members in 13 countries including Spa in Belgium, Baden Baden in Germany, Bath in United Kingdom, Ourense in Spain, Montecatini Terme in Italy but also Budapest - Hungary, Vichy in France , Chaves - Portugal and Loutra Pozar - Greece.

4. All members must satisfy these criteria:
Be within a country which is a member of the Council of Europe
Have a history of use as a thermal spa town dating back to the 19th Century or before
Have an active water source used for bathing or drinking as part of a thermal spa or wellbeing centre

5. Have a thermal architectural heritage dating back at least to the 19th century, with one or more buildings related to hydrotherapy which are classified historic monuments; or for historic spa towns within the Council of Europe which do not satisfy this point, the city must prove that it has a significant history of thermalism.

6. Offer high quality accommodation with specific facilities dedicated to thermal activity
Have a tradition of cultural events, and the infrastructure to support this, such as theatres, concert halls, casinos and bandstands.

7. OUR AIMS
The aims of this European network are to obtain recognition for the innovative and cultural qualities of European spa towns within the European Union, in order to develop a new plan for the tourist sector by encouraging cross-border tourism in the framework of "Destination Europe".
EHTTA encourages the economic development of spa towns and the safeguarding of their cultural and built heritage through exchanges of experience and good practices at the European level.

8. EUROPEAN DIMENSION
EHTTA is actively seeking to extend the European dimension of the network in line with the policies of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. The “intuitive” programme of Cultural Routes launched in 1987.
EHTTA’s goal is the increasing of the number of member towns and associations in the next few years. It will give the network a much higher recognition at the European level and in terms of political representation on issues related to health treatments using thermal mineral water.

9. EHTTA is increasing the cooperation with the key stakeholders in thermalism, culture and tourism, especially with the European Institutions, the Council of Europe and ESPA. - the EUROPEAN SPAS ASSOCIATION representing the spa industry.
EHTTA is strongly taken into consideration in its strategies the European projects and EU Structural Funds for developing the network of the future.

10. The so called "Thermal Pass” project:
EHTTA is working at the recognition for the innovative and cultural qualities of European spa towns within the European Union, in order to develop a new plan for the tourist sector by encouraging cross-border tourism as part of "Destination Europe".
The so called "Thermal Pass” project:
wellness tourist packages related to cultural heritage and events in the Historic Thermal Towns of Europe. It would enhance the visibility of our member towns in Europe, as European “Wellness and Heritage destinations”.

11. EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE 2011 /24
EHTTA is supporting the European directive 2011/24 which gives patients rights to cross-border healthcare and helps patients to make an informed choice.
EHTTA and ESPA will jointly bring this issue on the European working tables as European Institutions have the duty to support the development of thermalism in every aspect (wellness and healthcare) in connection with cultural tourism.

12. Thermal Atlas of Europe
what is it?
a project coordinated by EHTTA that will be implemented by EHTTA Scientific Committee.
a compendium of essential data that will be presented in a standardized form, and the data model will be subdivided into 15 categories.

13. The Atlas, based on a geographic information system (GIS), will offer a dynamic and user friendly mechanism through which to consult the most complete database of thermal heritage within the boundaries of the Council of Europe.

15. The Atlas will be presented using maps, data, tables, photos and videos; all accessible via the web with differing levels of access as appropriate (printed and digital versions will be available).
The prototype study has been developed with the cities of Bath in United Kingdom, and Mondariz Balneario in Spain, representing two very different cases of thermal towns by scale, history and typology, in a pilot project to test and prove the data model, which will be expanded in the next future.
