October in Primary 2 Literacy Using Sounds Topics in October Numeracy
We are well into our ‘Dear Zoo’ topic and have lovely work up on our display boards for all to see. To finish off we are going to explore the role of the vet and open a pet surgery in our classroom. We plan to design a new enclosure with junk art for a bored hamster. We are reading the story of Elmer and thinking of ways we are different and special. We plan to turn milk cartons into amazing Elmers . We are going to carry out a very exciting experiment to try and make toothpaste for Elmer (messy!) Later in the month we plan to read some Meg and Mog stories. They are excellent for practicing our decoding skills and spotting key words when reading. We plan to open a potion lab in our role play area and let the children carry out science experiments, finding out what happens when different colours are mixed. Numeracy We have taken part in lots of activities in class recognising and ordering numbers to 20. We know how to touch count objects up to 20 carefully and accurately. This month we will be Finding numbers before, after and in between to 20 Counting out and making money amounts with pennies and pound coins and knowing how to write totals Finding doubles within 10 using numicon initially and then remembering them Finding 2 more and 2 less than a given number within 20 Comparing and measuring lengths of animals with cubes Finding all the ways to make 4, 5 and then 6 using numicon and then remembering these facts eg; 2and what make 5? 4 and what make 5? Using Sounds We hope you are enjoying reading with your child every night. There is great benefit in reading books a second or third time during the week to revise over sight words and to practice using our sounds to work out new words. In class we will be practising: Finding the first, middle and last sound of three letter words and have a go at writing three letter words independently Changing the first, middle and end sounds to make new words. Junk Art Fun! We are planning STEM activities this month where your child will work in a small group to design their own unique Elmer character and a fun hamster home with beds, tunnels, slides, toys and places to hide. We would be delighted to receive these items from your recycling at home: Milk cartons washed out with lids, Kitchen roll tubes, Tin foil, Cardboard boxes Plastic boxes and fruit packaging Literacy In class we will be progressing on to four letters, four sounds. Activities will include: Sounding out the four sounds in order and then blending them (quite tricky!) Recording the sounds in order to make a word, first with cut and stick and then writing them We will also be learning to read colour words, reading short stories with common sight words and putting events in order. We will also write our findings from our science experiments. Look for colour words with your child when you are out and about. They will also appear in our reading packs.
