3 Persian Wars Athens became the wealthiest Greek city-state & began to rival the Persian Empire. A war began that lasted 10 years It forced the Greeks to combine their forces in order to defeat the Persians

4 The Age of Pericles This was the height of Athenian power.
It was the cultural center of Greece. The assembly started to pay a salary to allow the poor to participate. Pericles also began having trials by jury

5 Peloponnesian War Civil war breaks out between Athens and Sparta.
Lasts 27 years and divides Greece. Sparta wins with the help of Persia ending Athenian domination of Greece.

6 Socrates Socrates was the founding father of Greek Philosophy.
Invented the Socratic Method. “Question Everything” Arrested for corrupting the youth Died in prison from poison

7 Plato A student of Socrates
Plato distrusted democracy due to what had happened to Socrates. He believed that reason was the key to knowledge. He wrote The Republic, it describes his ideal form of government. All kids go to school for 20 years and are put in 1 of 3 categories; Producers, Guardians, or Philosopher-Kings.

8 The Republic Plato’s Republic was actually an Aristocracy.
Ruled by the best The smartest, most honorable, “best” people were in charge of the government.

9 Aristotle He was a student of Plato.
Didn’t agree with Plato’s ideas. He wrote Politics. In it he discusses the importance of the Rule of Law. Even rulers are subject to the law. He wanted a constitutional government controlled by the middle class. 3 good forms of government: Monarchy, Democracy, Aristocracy

10 Alexander the Great Alexander was from Macedonia in northern Greece.
He was a student of Aristotle. He would conquer Persia, Asia Minor, Egypt, and parts of India. He spread Greek ideas and a new culture emerged.
