1 Welcome to Fourth Grade Curriculum Night!

2 Mrs. Deal My background I grew up Kannapolis.
I graduated from UNCC with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. I have a Master’s in Reading Education My experience This is my 14th year teaching. I have also taught 3rd grade.

3 Mrs. James My background I grew up in New Jersey
I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. My experience This is my 14th year teaching in North Carolina. I have also taught preschool, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade.

4 Daily Schedule 7:50-8:15- Arrival/Morning Work 8:15-Announcements 8:20-9:10- Specials 9:10-10:40- Block A- ELA with Mrs. Deal 10:40-11:15- Personalization 11:15-11:45- Block A continued 11:55-12:20- Lunch 12:20-12:30- Restroom/ Prepare to Switch Blocks 12:30-2:15- Block B- Math with Mrs. James 2:15-2:20- Pack Up 2:20-2:50- Recess 3:00- Dismissal

5 Behavior Management My goal is for your child to become an independent learner and to take responsibility for their actions. The 4th grade teachers are using a reward system. There will be a monthly reward for good behavior and a daily reward for doing the right thing. All students will have a calendar in the back of their red folder. If they receive 5 X’s in a month, they will not be able to participate in the monthly reward.

6 Calendar

7 Absences When your child is absent, they have one day to make-up work for each day they were absent. Example: If a student misses three days, they have three days to make-up their work. If you have a chance, please fill out the absence excuse form on the Harrisburg Elementary website.

8 Birthday/Class Parties
Students are allowed to bring in treats for the class to celebrate birthdays. Treats must be store bought. These must be eaten in the cafeteria. Please follow the handbook rules when inviting classmates to outside parties. We will have two parties during the year. Room parents will coordinate small celebrations before winter break and at the end of the year. We will also celebrate Valentine’s Day by exchanging valentines and treats.

9 Grading Scale 90-100%=A 89%-80%=B 79%-70%=C 69%-60%=D 60% and below =F
All papers with D’s or F’s need to be signed and returned.

10 Student Planners Student planners are to go between home and school every day. Your child is required to write the day’s homework in his/her planner.

11 Field Trips We will have in-school and out of school field trips this year. Blackbeard Out of School: Old Salem in December Hiddenite in March

12 4th grade T-shirts We will be getting 4th grade class t-shirts.
T-shirts will be no more than $10.00. T shirts will be worn on field trips and other special days.

13 Homework and Daily Preparedness
Daily homework in math Reading challenge monthly Be sure your child is prepared each day by having all of their materials and appropriate paperwork signed. Any money or important office information must be placed in a closed envelope. Please notify me in writing of any dismissal changes.

14 Tuesday Folders A folder with the children’s work and assessments will go home every Tuesday. You may keep the work unless it is something that needs to be signed and returned. There will be a signature sheet in the folder for you to sign and return every Wednesday. Signatures let me know you have seen the folder.

15 Math Fourth graders will learn about: Whole numbers and Place Value
Fraction equivalents Fractions: Adding and Subtracting Fractions: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Decimals Geometry Measurement

16 Math Workshop Type of Instruction: Mini-lessons-whole class Stations
- Review, Practice, Enrichment Flexible grouping within classes - Small Group/One-on-One time with teacher and partners Students will take a weekly assessment on Fridays and Math 4 Today Assessments on Mondays

17 Reading Fourth graders will learn about:
Creating Meaning by Studying Characters Nonfiction Text Structures: Expository, Narrative and Hybrid Nonfiction Nonfiction Research Projects Historical Fiction Interpreting the Meaning of Texts Content Area Reading, Research, and Writing Test Preparation Social Issues and Book Clubs

18 Reader’s Workshop Reader’s Workshop emphasizes the importance of student engagement and the interaction between reader’s and text. It provides differentiated instruction in reading. Reader’s Workshop focuses on the teaching of reading strategies. The purpose of Reader’s Workshop is to foster independence among readers. Strategies we will be working on this year are: Making Connections Creating Mental Images Making Inferences/Drawing Conclusions Asking Questions Determining What is Important Synthesizing Monitoring Comprehension and Meaning

19 Writing Fourth graders will learn: Personal Narratives
Historical Fiction Opinion Writing Realistic Fiction Expository/Informational Writing Content Area Reading, Research, and Writing

20 Social Studies Fourth grade students will learn:
History of North Carolina Geography and Environmental Literacy Economics and Financial Literacy Civics and Governance Culture of North Carolina Students will have a weekly NC Dailies sheet that will be completed here at school.

21 Science Fourth graders will learn: Forces and Motion
Matter: Properties and Change Energy: Conservation and Transfer Earth in the Universe Earth History Ecosystems Molecular Biology

22 Communication Communication between us is KEY in the success of your child! Lines of communication in order of preference: Notes: Please send me a note in your child’s agenda or Tuesday folder. Phone: Call me at school to leave a message. ext. 201 James, 202 Deal *** is preferred method of communication. If you have a message that I need to get right away, please speak with one of the secretaries so they can make sure we get it in time. (transportation changes)
