Novell NetWare 6 Direction & Roadmap

Today’s Expectations Consistency of Experience
Personalisation and Quality of Service Information and Content Security, Privacy and Reputation Interestingly whilst companies have corporate objectives, consumers of services, ie customers, employees, partners have their own expectations of how they expect to work for example: In todays world people expect their experience to go with them regardingless of time, location, device, your internal problems count for nothing, its about what people expect, times have changed; When determining what products you deploy, think about your strategy, about expectations, today its about availability, personalisation and quality of service, doing this will drive loyalty, remember in the eBusiness world when your service is unfriendly, difficult or unavailable, your competitor is only one click away; Also remember that when people interact with your business, they don’t care about platforms, type of storage or applications, they become irrelevant, what’s relevant is the information and content, so don’t choose just on brand, think about the accessibility, availability issues; remember when a supplier needs access to your business, he may need stock inventory data, he/she doesn’t care if its in Oracle or stored in a data warehouse on an AS/400, as long as its available and accessible. Also think about the benefits from an education standpoint, do you want to train your suppliers on how to use Oracle?, show them where to get the data, and present it to them in a meaningful way; Security is important to business, its all about that reputation that I mentioned before, (use high profile security breaches as examples of damage caused), users expect to come across security controls, as long as its not intrusive, or difficult, (online banking is a good example, we want to know its secure, but how many of us want to remember a 27 character password), what most do care about is privacy, be clear about how you handle personal data, who owns it, (with MS for example people who use passport will have their data stored at MS for at least 1 Year after they stop using it, I’d be concerned about that), what we do know is that if security is addressed properly it is a business enabler. At Novell we solve business problems that address both corporate objectives and consumer expectations.

Customer Trends The number of remote users is growing, laptop sales growing faster than desktop PCs. Storage needs double every six months, regardless of customer size. Customers require constant availability of their Net Services ( , File, Print, Web Site etc). Printing still one of the most tangible benefits of the network. Customers purchasing more multi-processor (MP) Intel hardware. Lack of full backups of corporate data, especially on mobile devices.
4
Market Trends Small Business Distributed Consolidated
Single server Require all-in-one servers Most likely to move to hosted environment today Small Business Distributed Typical NetWare customer today Many servers, broadly distributed Some servers dedicated to single purpose (GroupWise®) Many servers performing multiple functions Consolidated Servers & Storage Emerging as enterprise deployments pull storage off distributed servers to consolidated storage centers Additive to enterprise servers Reliability and security more critical than ever Hosted environment, ASP or storage data centers

NetWare 6 Mission: NetWare 6 provides non-stop access to networked stored information, regardless of location or device and is the most highly available platform for running Net services. Vision: Network experience goes where users go Type and location of information is transparent to users Expectation of constant availability drives corporate network strategies With NetWare 6 and the latest Novell Net services, users are no longer tied to a given workstation and the expectations of a personalized mobile network experience are becoming more a reality. Mobile networking has challenges but as bandwidth increases and protocols align, the dependency on workstations will decrease. Users just want to do their jobs--they simply want information available regardless of what device they’re using or where they are when they need it. System administrators do worry about how much space is available on a given server or where a given volume resides. With NetWare 6, many issues--for both SysAdmins and users--simply don’t apply anymore. Although many Novell products are designed to run well on other platforms--like Windows NT and Unix--and although Novell’s eBusiness platform is designed to exploit cross platform opportunities, Novell believes that NetWare is still the most highly available platform on which to run all Net services. And, once the decision to implement a given solution is made, NetWare is often selected as the platform because of its scalability, manageability, and performance.

NetWare Shift Infrastructure MP enabled Reliable NSS 3.0 Scalable
A strong network must have a solid foundation. From the beginning, the operating system must be designed to control and store a large volume of digital assets, which include files, databases, images, streaming audio, and video. General-purpose operating systems that run everything from handhelds to desktops to servers cannot provide the accessibility, reliability, or security necessary for today’s network load. In other words, the network operating system that is a jack of all trades, master of none is not sufficient to meet the demands of today’s networking. Novell has an excellent reputation for producing first class Network Operating Systems. With the introduction of NetWare 6, Novell once again raises the bar, my improving scalability through new technologies such as Multiprocessor enabling many of the OS services as well as better storage management through Novell Storage Services (NSS). To further improve reliability Novell includes clustering technology to enhance an already excellent foundation. Infrastructure Reliable Scalable Secure MP enabled NSS 3.0 Clustering

NetWare Server, Where are you ?
To further demonstrate Novell’s second to done reputation for producing reliable Network Operating Systems. I have included a news story from Carolina USA.

“i” before “e” “IDC contends that IT infrastructure services are the backbone of the ebusiness model…” IDC (March 2000) "A robust, fault-resilient systems infrastructure is imperative to support e-business initiatives and global operations. IT organisations must focus on site-level availability, and address all potential causes of application downtime, both planned and unplanned." The Metagroup (Sept 2000)

Multi-Processor Enabled
Some of the NetWare 6 Multi Processor-enabled components: NSS NDS eDirectory TCP/IP stack IBM WebSphere JVM Winsock HTTP stack WebDAV Apache/Enterprise Web Server Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) Service Location Protocol (SLP) 2 Gigabit Ethernet/100 Megabit Ethernet/10 Megabit Ethernet Improved Scalability Only the kernel in both NetWare 5.1 and 5.0 is MP-enabled. Effectively we have MP enabled every NetWare feature from the disk to the wire, there by improving the scalability of NetWare to greater heights. NDPS and other NetWare components and services that are not MP-enabled in NetWare 6 will be MP-safe. MP-safe components and services are single-threaded and pose no threat to the system's stability, even when running on SMP hardware.

Novell Storage Services (NSS) 3.0
Benefits More efficient use of existing disk space with volumes consuming disk space from disk pools. Data Shredding (U.S. Green Book File Security standard) for secure deletions 8 TB volumes with unlimited files and volumes Script based management of server parameters Also included: SYS volume support TTS support OP-lock support for client caching RAID 0 support via software NSS first appeared with NetWare 5.0. NSS allows for unlimited disk volumes that can be up to 8TBs (Terabytes) in size. For example, a single file of 8TBs can fill one volume. This might be necessary to accommodate a huge database table. Alternately, a single disk can be logically separated into an unlimited number of smaller volumes to meet security or application requirements. NetWare 6 continues the improvement of file services through better NSS performance and flexibility. The NSS version included with NetWare 6 now supports file compression. The compression utility’s efficiency generally ranged around 50 percent, meaning a 10GB disk suddenly held almost 20GB worth of files. Compression grabs plenty of attention, because everyone loves getting twice as much of something (especially storage) than was actually purchased. But other features of NSS in NetWare 6 provide real benefits as well, matching and surpassing the NSS abilities in NetWare 5.1. Would you like to be able to delete a file with full confidence that it will never return, no matter which utilities promise file reincarnation? NSS with NetWare 6 employs the U.S. Green Book File Security standard for data shredding. Shredded files never return to haunt anyone. The list of NSS features is quite lengthy, but the short story simply promises better file-system performance, reliability, and management using the newest generation of file-service technology possible. Partition-level mirroring, RAID 0 striping support via software, pooling space from a disk available for any volume to use, and faster streaming speeds for backup are some, but not all, of the new features of Novell Storage Services.

Problems of Information Availability
Your data is everywhere and yet, frequently not where you need it You have several computers which can author, edit, and share the info You have different document versions on different machines, so you the file to yourself Document application Office Spreadsheet application A disk failure on one of your systems would be a serious disaster 1 out of 1,000 laptops are stolen; 10% are targeted for their data; the files on your laptop are not secure if it is stolen Presentation application Your data is not universally available from any network because of firewalls, protocols, networks, connectivity, etc. Mobile Your current choices are too onerous, too slow, or don’t solve the problem You don’t want to radically change the way you interact with your systems and applications You don’t dare store your sensitive data on the network Home Computer Kiosk On the road

So it’s great to be able to work from wherever you go, but what do you do when you get there, get your work done and then need to print it? Suddenly, there’s a scramble. Desperate calls made to the help desk. IS staff that needs to drop what they’re doing and get you set up to print--IF they can get you set up. Driver disks to install. Headaches to get. Nightmares to explore. What’s the point of mobile networking if printing doesn’t come along? Well now it does. With NetWare 6, users can print virtually—from any location to any other location—just by choosing a printer on their company’s Web site. With Novell Internet Printing, customers can literally locate a printer on a Web site and print to any printer around the world. The drivers are automatically downloaded--and you’re ready to go! NetWare 6’s Internet Printing capability eliminates the complexities of printing over the Internet and makes location-based printing a reality. So now, your customers don’t have to have a different print solution for every network in their business--now, you can set up access for them to all of their print resources through any Web browser. In fact, Internet Printing gives users a customized view of printers--so users can immediately view available printers from a designated Web page, even down to viewing floor plans to see where printers are located. So now they can find any printer in the company--and pick the printer that’s closest to them to print to! Talk about taking a problem and turning it into a convenience!

Novell Internet Printing
HTTP IP IPP Novell Internet Printing server components transform any printer into an IPP printer, putting it on the Internet and making it easily available to all authorized users. To confirm by IPP enabling NDPS or Print Q’s Novell can take your existing printing infrastructure and IPP enable it. NO NEED TO BUY EXPENSIVE NEW IPP PRINTERS !!! However if you have ipp printers Novell can embrace these and improve both the user experience and the management of these printers.
