4 Mission & Goals of Secondary SIG
Our mission is to support, collaborate and advocate to improve the education of secondary English language learners. Goals : Increase secondary focused sessions at annual WABE conference Better develop an online space for sharing resources and collaborating Collaborate and Highlight “brightspots” across the state of SIG focus areas

7 Position Nominations & Voting Procedures
Open Positions: Co-Chair – Secretary – Resource Manager – Open nominations Each nomination needs a “second” If multiple nominations for same position, a paper vote will take place. The candidate receiving the most votes will be selected.

9 Bright Spots A ‘bright spot’ is something exciting and innovative your district is doing to support secondary ELLs that you think is worth highlighting. It can be something you’ve done, are working on now, or something in the works. Take a few minutes to write down some bright spots on the lined sticky notes and please identify your district. Share in a small group.

10 Affinity Mapping What is a bright spot you or someone in your district could present about at the WABE Institute in January? Write one bright spot (topic) per post it note. Put your name on each post it note Move into groups of 6 In SILENCE put all post-it notes on your table Organize your ideas by “natural” categories Once your group has settled on categories, place your post-it notes in columns on your table.

11 Affinity Mapping Cont…
Talk about the categories and come up with a name for each one. Choose a spokesperson from your group to talk about: What are potential topics for your group?

12 Affinity Mapping-Bringing it all together!
Finally-after hearing everyone’s topic, move to a topic that inspires you. Action Step On a sticky note, write your name (and if a panel idea, the names of the panel members) and topic for a session. We will collect them. Write your idea down somewhere for you to remember too!

Exit Activity Please take your post-it notes where you wrote your secondary ELL bright spots from your district and post them on the presentation board. We will share them at the Secondary ELL SIG information table. After the conference look for a link for the Secondary ELL SIG on the WABE website! Thanks for coming today!
