2 What is a possessive noun?
With your shoulder partner, discuss the following question. What is a possessive noun?

3 What is a possessive noun?
A possessive noun shows ownership. This may refer to something we own, or it may refer to something which is a part of us. (Example: Our bodies or emotions)

4 Forming the POSSESSIVE of a SINGULAR Noun
To make a singular noun possessive, add ‘s.

5 The food belonging to the fish.
Examples: The food belonging to the fish. The claw belonging to the lobster. The fish’s food. The lobster’s claw.

6 Forming the POSSESSIVE of a PLURAL Noun
THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO MAKE A PLURAL NOUN POSSESSIVE.

7 Forming the POSSESSIVE of a PLURAL Noun
Rule #1 If the plural noun ends in an “S” , add ‘.

8 The teeth belonging to the sharks.
Examples: The teeth belonging to the sharks. The pearls belonging to the oysters. The sharks’ teeth. The oysters’ pearls.

9 Forming the POSSESSIVE of a PLURAL Noun
Rule #2 If the plural noun does not end in an “S” , add ‘S.

10 The babies belonging to the sheep.
Examples: The babies belonging to the sheep. The fish belonging to the children. The sheep’s babies. The children’s fish.

11 REMEMBER: All singular nouns are made possessive by adding ‘s.
Plural nouns are different: If the plural noun ends in an “S”, add just an apostrophe (‘). If the plural noun does not end in an “s”, add ‘S.

12 Rally Coach Directions:
Each set of shoulder partners have a practice sheet and a dry/erase marker. The even number partner will begin by completing the first problem. As they answer, they will explain their thought process on how they solve the problem. Their partner will be listening, offering praise if it is correct and positively coaching their partner if it is incorrect. Switch roles and complete the next problem.
