1 This week’s HW: Variation and Adaptations – Due FRIDAY
January 23th, 2017 DO NOW Prompt What type of environment would you predict this plant lives in? Reminders: --Tutorials to improve grades --Voice levels at 0 during Do Now This week’s HW: Variation and Adaptations – Due FRIDAY

2 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What kind of structures help plants adapt and survive in their environments? OBJECTIVES: -Explore Plant Adaptations -Introduce project

3 Finish Friday’s Dog Breeding Activity

4 ENGAGE: Corpse Flower

5 EXPLORE: Plant Adaptation Sort: Match the Picture with: -Name of the Plant -Description of the Adaptation -Description of the Environment

6 Iris This plant has a “bulb”. This feature serves as a food source when this species lies dormant in colder weather. It allows it to survive and bloom in the spring This species is commonly found in gardens in the United States

7 Baobab Tree The trunk of this tree is hollow inside and can store up to 120,000 liters of water. The bark is like cork and is fire resistant. The fruit is called “monkey bread” and has lots of Vitamin C. This tree is native to Madagascar and can survive the constant droughts there.

8 Bee Orchid The flower of this plant resembles or mimics a bee. Bees are attracted to the flower because they think it is a female bee. They then pollinate the flower. These flowers live in Europe and Asia.

9 Saguaro Cactus This tree like cactus can grow as tall as 70 feet. During rains the cactus will swell up and hold the water that it collects, to use slowly during times without rain. This cactus grows in Saguaro Desert in Arizona and Northern Mexico.

10 Yucca This plant has sharp hard leaves that help protect it against consumers. This plant also has flowers that bloom when there is enough rain so insects will pollinate it. This plant grows in the deserts of the Trans Pecos Ecoregion (Big Bend).

11 Plant Adaptations Plant Adaptations

12 Quick Write – Page 21 Title: Plant Adaptations
Which plant adaptation that we discussed today seems the most useful to the survival of the plant? Explain why in 2-3 COMPLETE sentences.

13 January 24, 2017 DO NOW Prompt If you were to create a new breed out of two of the breeds below, what would it look like, and what would you call it? Reminders: --Adaptations Twitter project due Feb. 6th

14 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How have humans influenced the traits that organisms pass on to their offspring? OBJECTIVES: -Watch “Dogs Decoded” to understand selective breeding -Create Dog breeds to understand genetic changes humans make to animals.

15 Laptops You MUST completely shut down the computer so that it is powered OFF. Return the laptop to its proper numbered SHELF PLUG IN the power source.

16 Selective Breeding: Dogs

20 DO NOW Describe Selective Breeding in your own words. Bonus:
January 25, 2016 DO NOW Prompt Describe Selective Breeding in your own words. Bonus: Do you know another name for it? Reminders: --Adaptations Twitter project due Feb. 6th

21 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How have humans influenced the traits that organisms pass on to their offspring? OBJECTIVES: -Watch “Super Cow Creators” to understand selective breeding -Create Bee Breeds to understand selective breeding -Read about Genetically Modified Foods

22 Adaptations Twitter Project
For this assignment, you will create a poster with a tweet and a picture of an organism of your choice Read over project requirements Due Friday, February 6th – NO EXCEPTIONS!

23 Adaptations Twitter Project
@giraffe2014: My long neck allows me to reach the leaves on the tallest trees #naturalselection #adaptation #survival

24 Adaptations Twitter Project
@prettyliltulip: Rocky soil or clay? Harsh winters? My #bulb keeps me stable and well fed #sorryotherflowers

25 Adaptations Twitter Project
@sleepybrownbear: Just woke up from hibernating, feeling hungry but alive #justanotherwinter

26 Adaptations Twitter Project
@baldyeagle: Hey little mouse, don’t make me spread my wings because you know I am an incredible hunter #hollowbones #sharpvision

30 Selective Breeding aka Artificial Selection
Super Cows

31 Turn n Talk Turn to your partner and explain how a company in Belgium was able to shape a cow with such a massive muscular system.

32 Video HUGE Texas Beehive! A man is called to a vacant home to extract a massive beehive.

33 Bee Breeding Using the class set bee breed guide, you will choose which bees you will use to create a super breed. Follow teacher’s instructions on the overhead…

34 Bee Terms Brood=babies Drifting=getting lost Foragers=food-finders
Propolis=tree sap used to seal hives (messy) Swarming = leaving the hive to live elsewhere Overwinter = Survives winter Comb=wax where honey is stored Brace/burr comb =wax that is made in the wrong place

35 Genetically Modified Foods
Partner Read the Article Answer the questions with your partner. Be prepared to share.

36 Video Neil Says “Chill out” When the video ends, talk to your group about whether you believe Neil, or whether GMOs are something that should not be continued. Back up your argument with examples.

37

38 DO NOW How are natural selection and selective breeding different?
Date: 1/27 Q: How have humans influenced the traits that organisms pass on to their offspring? How are natural selection and selective breeding different?

39 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How have humans influenced the traits that organisms pass on to their offspring? OBJECTIVES: -Finish Bee Breeding -Finish GMO Reading
