1 Primetime Name three areas of physics and what are studied in those areas. Name the parts of an experiment.

2 Assignment Section Review p.9

3 Phy Section 1.2 TEKS 1A,B, 2E,H,J

4 Dimension A description of what kind of physical quantity is represented by a certain measurement Types of dimensions include Length Mass Time Temp current

5 Systeme International
Also called the SI system Standard measurement system for science Has seven units: meter (m), kilogram (kg), second (s) SI units can be accompanied by powers of 10 (called scientific notation) to indicate very large or very small quantities Conversions between units is possible and largely necessary in science Conversions are in the back of your book

6 Dimensional Analysis Used to convert from one unit to another using “visual” methods Make sure your units match your dimensions; ex: time = seconds, distance = meters, mass = kilograms Any measurements you make need to be measured using the same units to make calculations easier

7 Primetime Why do scientists around the world work in SI units?
What are the SI base units and symbols for length, mass, and time?

8 DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS:
This approach analyzes the dimensions of the problem and sets up a problem so that the starting dimension is changed to the answer by using a conversion fraction. Here the starting amount is 24 inches and the answer wanted is in feet. The conversion is 1 foot = 12 inches. We write the inches on the bottom so that the inches will cancel leaving only feet. In dimensional analysis you only set up the problem as multiplication. If division is needed, the number is placed in the denominator. This will be apparent because placing the value in the denominator will cancel out the dimension (unit of measure) that you want to get rid of.

9 Dimensional Analysis Ex In to Ft

10 Primetime Grab your science journal and on the front page make a title page that includes Your Name, Subject and period After you have finished that, starting with your title page, number the bottom left and right of every page in your journal starting at 1 If you finish that then turn to the second page and on the left page at the top write Table of Contents

11 Primetime What is dimensional analysis and what does it help you do?
Express 3,000,567 and in scientific notation.

12 Sample Problem 1A

13 Measurement Imperfections
Two ways to describe them Accuracy: describes how close a measured value is to the true value; ex: measuring a football field to be 98 yards Problems with accuracy are due to human error, method error, or instrumental error Precision: refers to the degree of exactness with which a measurement is made and stated; how repeatable your findings are Measurements can be precise but not accurate. It just means you were wrong a lot.

14 Primetime What are the two types of measurement imperfections and how might they have impacted the results of your lab from yesterday?

15 Significant Figures/Digits
These are digits in a measurement that are known with certainty plus one digit that is uncertain There are rules for sig figs Scientific notation: all numbers are written as powers of 10; ex: 2 x 106
