1 Providing access to GEOSS Resources The GEOSS Common Infrastructure - GCI Giovanni Rum GEO Secretariat AfriGEOSS Symposium, Victoria Falls April 2016

2 A better title ……… The GCI we want AND The GCI we (currently) have

3 GEO promotes Broad Open Data Policy

4 Private sector providers
The GCI we have Private sector providers GEOSS Portal GEO Website Discovery and Access Broker (DAB) Japan USA Canada South Africa Australia Brazil Germany Russia Chile France Italy … more than 100 public providers… Satellites Cryosphere Energy Disasters Health Biodiversity International Providers Regional & National Providers Environment Climate/Weather Ocean Geology/Soil Spain New Zealand Norway Water Switzerland China Africa 4

5 GCI has doubled its n. of queries over last year
The GCI we have GEOSS Assets and GCI Usage over time First half of 2016 More than 3 Million queries GCI has doubled its n. of queries over last year

6 Implementing new GCI capabilities
GEO started in 2016 a systematic process to implement new GCI capabilities, starting from a major revision of the relevant GCI “User requirements”. A broad review of the document will start next week, after its presentation at the GEO Work Programme Symposium (2-4 May 2016) Basic requirement: the GCI should allow actual access to free and open resources User needs grouped in Structuring user access: from customized search to pre-defined sets of resources addressing thematic areas (in principle the GEO SBAs) and geographical areas Performance parameters of the Portal, such as Multi-criteria search, single sign-on, saving prevoius searches On-line tools for resources visualization and mash-up

7 GCI User Requirements Functionalities Overview
Functionalities described in the GCI User Requirements Document Reference to the document Multi-criteria search: Spatial/temporal/thematic.. 4.2.1 Incremental search/filter 4.2.2 Informative and efficient search output 4.2.3 Storing previous searches 4.2.4 RSS Feeds 4.2.5 Data accessibility: format of accessible data 4.3 Single Sign On: 4.4 Data visualization extent bigger 4.5 Data visualization - footprint & summary metadata Data visualization tools: zoom, pan, info Mash Ups 4.6.1 Advanced web applications 4.6.2 Data quality & accessibility monitoring tools 4.8 User data request interface 4.9.1 GCI user experience 4.9.2 GCI Statistics requirements 4.10.2 Others…your inputs!

8 The GCI we want FUNCTIONS Structured access Search Discovery
Visualization Online tools Easy Access ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES Data Information Knowledge

9 The GCI we have now FUNCTIONS Structured access Search Discovery

10 GEOSS/GCI architectural issues
Regional/subregional GEOSS nodes? Virtual Physical Regional in situ networks Data to Users vs Users to data

11 GCI Thematic – Geographic Based Portals Light Approach Strategy
Data Providers Data Providers Data Providers Data Providers Data Providers GCI/GEODAB GCI/GEODAB to serve pre-selected data resources matching the spatial area/thematic of the SBA – Geographic based Portal Establishing pre-authomated harvesting from GEODAB to Community Portal Interface- leveraging the GEODAB APIs and VIEW functionalities Secretariat and GEODAB Community Portal Interface
