1 EMSO European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and Water-Column Observatory
Angelo De Santis on behalf of the EMSO Consortium

2 EMSO ESFRI Research Infrastructure
EMSO is the European Research Infrastructure of fixed seafloor and water column observatories constituting a distributed infrastructure for long-term monitoring of marine environmental processes Ruhl et al., 2011 Challenging RI for: Global ocean warming and acidification Impact and sustainability of marine resource exploitation Real-time observations of earthquakes and tsunamis

3 EUROPE AS A WORLD LEADER IN
04/03/14 The EMSO-ERIC: EUROPE AS A WORLD LEADER IN MARINE SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGICAL EXCELLENCE Cutting-edge - at the forefront of science in a strategic, global sector Timely - climate change and natural hazards won't wait ! Truly international - uniting countries for the advancement of European research and innovation excellence Valuable - bringing huge socio-economic benefits to scientists, SMEs and industry, education, public at large 10 Signatory Countries: Italy, UK, Portugal, Romania, Greece, The Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain Other Countries are Expected to sign

4 EMSO nodes (11 sites & 4 test sites) - present status
Koljö Fjord OBSEA MeDON Molène SmartBay nodes operating nodes (8/11) test sites

5 EMSO data example Arctic 2500 m depth temperature
Warming in the Arctic is much faster than global warming Strong feedback also to climate in lower latitudes Highly adapted commu- nities and processes are particularly vulnerable to global change Ecosystems response in the Arctic is expected to be particularly intense theres several reasons for observations in the arctic: fast warming – feedback to global climate - vulnerable communities – strong response 2500 m depth temperature Deep sea temperature measurements at „Hausgarten“ Klages et al. unpublished The Arctic is in rapid transition: deep sea temperature has been increasing in the last 10 years 5
