Contributing to these shortages is the pressured pipeline where too few are produced and those that are produced emigrate elsewhere
In SSA there are 145k MDs for 821 million people vs. 2.8 million MDs in Europe
Another way of looking at the same problem. Overall, sub-Saharan Africa has a physician-to-population ratio of 18 per , compared with countries such as India (60 per ), Brazil (170 per ) and 250 per 100,000 for the US, France(370 per ). Africa’s poorest countries have even greater physician shortages

11. GHSP Mission Serve as medical and nursing school faculty
Provide clinical instruction, mentoring and other faculty activities, as needed
Help build national capacity in medical and nursing education
Launched in March 2012.
- inaugural deployments of doctors and nurses, expand to recruit, deploy, and support a range of US health professionals to serve as clinical faculty
- formally and informally teach students, housestaff and other learners best practice standards through daily rounds on patients and separate regularly scheduled didactic sessions and courses.
- enhance existing clinical training systems and structures through the development and implementation of innovative teaching tools, clinical guidelines, treatment protocols, and continuing education programs in partnership with host country faculty.
- cohort will include board eligible or board certified doctors and nurses experienced as educators in core specialties. All Global Health Service Partnership Peace Corps Volunteers (GHSP PCVs) will have Increased support to in-country faculty will help ensure that the growing numbers of enrolled medical, nursing, and other health professional students have effective educational environments.
