2 National Teaching Fellowship Objectives
To generate a national conversation around how to better communicate and engage students in their program of study Increase transparency and relevance of curricula for students. Offers access to an already developed interactive curriculum visualisation tool – MyCourseMap – built on digital-touch technology for all mobile devices and is available for pilot across institutions. National Teaching Fellowship Roadshow 2017

3 When you start university…
where do you start? Enrol? What units? This That Other Specialisation? Graduate capabilities? Course learning outcomes ©Lisa Tee National Teaching Fellowship Roadshow 2017

4 How can we increase visibility of curriculum to students?
Are students aware of the importance of CLOs? Are students aware of the importance of graduate skills for graduate success? What about graduate skills and employability How does your institution present course information?

5 First year Pharmacy student
I am excited about getting into Uni and very happy to be accepted into the Pharmacy course, but its scary……as I do not know what to expect in the course……… To be able to see the entire course map and listening to students talking about the units will increase my confidence. With increased confidence, I will perform better…… First year Pharmacy student Indeed my personal experience with Year 1 students on Day One during Orientation. Quite often student sitting on their own. I would chat with them. Ask if they are excited about commencing the Pharmacy Course…… Created a visual MycourseMap in This was used for marketing and presented as a poster. MyCourseMap is an interactive visual curriculum map that supports students in understanding the structure and integration of units in their chosen or prospective degree and assist them in appreciating the relevance of individual units of study to the profession or discipline. Furthermore, this dynamic and interactive tool, available through mobile and touch digital technologies, has the capacity to inform, inspire and engage students by enhancing their professional identity development. A comment from a secondary school student upon presentation of the Bachelor of Pharmacy visual degree map as an example of a curriculum map was: “This map will show me the entire degree that I will embark on. With references from videos of students and professionals telling me about the units that I will be taking in the entire degree, I will be more confident and with increased confidence, I will perform better”. ©Lisa Tee National Teaching Fellowship Roadshow 2017

7 a mothership / docking station for learning resources
MyCourseMap™ Concept One stop portal for course information - immediate relevance Horizontal and vertical integration of curriculum – holistic view Peer, graduate and employer stories –motives and inspires Links learning outcomes to assessments – assessment drives learning Links content to CLOs– competency & accreditation Graduate capabilities - employability One tool many uses – marketing, curriculum review and renewal, accreditation, remediation and study plan….and more a mothership / docking station for learning resources The MCM was developed based on concepts which is further based on the needs of students and staff. Specifically, the MyCourseMap structure: provides immediate relevance for degree content and its organisation provides a visual picture of the horizontal and vertical integration across the curriculum identifies the desired graduate capabilities with links to the degree content links learning outcomes with unit/courses and assessment tasks allows linking of content and assessment tasks to CLOs embeds peer, graduate and employer stories (through text, audio and video) to demonstrate the relevance of the course/program structure and content clearly identifies graduate employment prospects for degrees and degree streams provides a tool which can also be used for curriculum review and renewal by embedding horizontal and vertical integration within a program of study. For staff, manual construction of curriculum maps is a cumbersome and time-intensive process. The MyCourseMap tool provides a readily accessible curriculum map which enables the curriculum to be interrogated with ease. With the development of the visual curriculum map, information linked to the map will be easily accessible to students and staff. Indeed I see this a a portal or perhaps as a Star Wars fan, I see this as the mothership – a docking station for other learning and teaching resources such as virtual tool, gamification, Interprofessional education etc… ©Lisa Tee National Teaching Fellowship Roadshow 2017

20 Making curriculum visible: A Psychology Course Cluster Review Case Study from UOW

21 Higher Education Standards Framework
All accredited courses of study are subject to periodic (at least every seven years) comprehensive reviews that are overseen by peak academic governance processes and include external referencing or other benchmarking activities. Results of regular interim monitoring, comprehensive reviews, external referencing and student feedback are used to mitigate future risks to the quality of the education provided and to guide and evaluate improvements, including the use of data on student progress and success to inform admission criteria and approaches to course design, teaching, supervision, learning and academic support. UOW is only the second higher educational provider to undergo the reregistration process under the new standards framework in Focus will be on assessment, course quality and offshore provision. 22 The Psychology Course Cluster at UOW
Course design and coherence – content, relevance, sequencing of subjects, core vs electives, progression through majors, minors and other structural elements of the course e.g assessment. Course delivery – multi-location (UOW and Singapore), student engagement and support, flexibility for students, taking into account possibilities such as course transfer, part time study, access to study abroad and cross-disciplinary study. Course performance – course data, monitor, review, report, improvement and implementation of changes Quality assurance – meeting APAC accreditation requirements, benchmarking, peer review of assessment standards, course review and annual monitoring etc. Academic leadership – APD working with discipline teams, teaching teams and with other faculties Document title
