8 But they are all just useful skills for…..
LIFE!!!!

9 Delivery during Weds pm sessions with tutor groups
Sessions centred around each of the four Rs and linked to other lessons and wider life. Progression from year 5 to year 8

10 Progression Year 5 – introduction to the 4Rs
Year 6 – synonyms for the 4Rs / words linked to the 4Rs (including ACORNS words) and how to implement them in school Year 7 – implement 4Rs and growth mindset in lessons and everyday life Year 8 – the 4Rs & life skills

11 Outcomes Pupils are equipped with more effective learning skills and strategies and putting these into use during their learning. Create an ethos of resilience in the learning of all pupils across the school (and they are regularly demonstrating this).

12 Year 5 introduced Language of Learning
Trialled so far… Year 5 introduced Language of Learning DT displayed the use of language of learning in the T&L of the subject & demonstrated the language of learning in lessons. Year 8 put into practice the skills and techniques learnt though decision making exercises during life skills (and linked to maths & literacy)

13 What we’ve discovered…
When it works it seems to have an impact on the maturity, independence and determination of the pupils. There has been huge buy-in from the Y5 team, and the pupils seem excited about their learning using the 4Rs as their guide. Develops a sense of unity across year groups 4Rs caters for all abilities and allowing for success and abolishing the fear of failure some pupils may feel.

14 What we’ve discovered…
Hard for the scheme to be fully implemented into KS3 using the character approach – needs a more mature approach focusing on the words. Can be challenging to remember as a teacher to consistently use and refer to the language and subsequent key skills that are born out of the 4 Rs.

15 Next steps All year groups to plan & deliver sessions throughout the year. 4Rs to become school-wide language Realise that this is something that we almost all do already. Illuminating it for the pupils so they appreciate the skills they are learning, and how they are transferable across curricula and all areas of the school, both pastorally and academically.

16 Training needs and resources
CPD to underpin the Language of Learning in teachers and pupils – MOTs, learning walks, lesson observations, school visits, wider reading, planning time.
