The human skeleton is divided into 2 distinct parts:
1.The Axial Skeleton 2.The Appendicular Skeleton Axial – along “axis” or center of body Appendicular includes appendages as well as “girdles” that connect appendages to body (shoulder area, hips)

4 Types of Bones 1. Long bones: longer than they are wide 2. Short bones: short and cubed shaped 3. Flat bones: broad surfaces for protection of organs 4. Irregular bones: varied shapes sizes and surfaces

Another type of bone: Sesamoid bones: small, flat shaped like a sesame seed (Patella)

Bone Growth Infant (newborn) has over 300 bones
Cartilage hardens into bone through ossification Bones also fuse together to form adult 206 Growth plates at end of bones Cartilage cells divide, new cartilage pushes old cartilage toward middle of bone As these cartilage cells die, the space they took up is replaced with bone When bones reach full size, growth plates also convert to bone
