9 Past Tense Verbs A verb is an action word that shows something that we do. Past tense verbs tell about actions that already happened. Past tense verbs can be simple, adding –ed at the end, or irregular, changing the word completely. For example: I walked to school last week. (simple, adding –ed to “walk”)*the time “last week” tells me it is past tense Sam ate a huge sandwich for lunch yesterday. (irregular, changing the word from “eat” to “ate”)*The time “yesterday” tells me it is past tense

Bess has a black cap. This sentence tells how things are different, so this sentences helps readers “contrast”. Tom and Bess both have red caps. This sentence tells how things are alike, so this sentences helps readers “compare”.

The main idea of a story is the most important idea. It is what the whole story is about. Details in a story are sentences that support the main idea. They tell about the main idea. Underground Town Have you seen a praise dog town? That is where prairie dogs live. But this town has no building or houses. Prairie dogs live underground. They dig deep into the earth to make tunnels. Along the tunnels are rooms for sleeping or storing food. One room is lined with grass for the babies! The main idea of this story is… O towns without buildings O underground home for prairie dogs O raising young praising dogs A detail in this story is… O prairie dogs like the sun O prairie dogs are cute O prairie dogs live underground
