Employee died after falling 20 feet to the ground while making repairs to residential structure Head and Face: Worker was struck in head and killed by piece of metal while operating lathe Respiratory: Employee died from possible hydrogen sulfide exposure while cleaning sewage from pipe 68,000 people die every day world wide as a result of accidents in the workplace* These are actual injuries, pulled from safety organization fatalities reports, personal injuries, while not in the headlines, are personal catastrophes. Death is the extreme, but imagine life without the ability to see your children, without being able to hear music, to have to fight for every breath. India: In the process of updating their “Factories Act” Language is old and doesn’t make sense Revising to include specific language on how Personal Protective Equipment plays a role when the problem can’t be engineered out Biggest barrier to safety is enforcement China: Large numbers of death in the coal mines China is in the process of upgrading their standards and safety regulations Workplace safety needs regulations that make sense, but need a community of people committed to a safe environment and safe people Large or small, the most powerful thing companies can do to further safety is cultivate a culture of safety

9 Community of Safety How do organizations cultivate a community of safety? Value of safety demonstrated by senior leadership Employee engagement and empowerment Supervisory involvement and support Recognition and reporting of serious hazards Availability of necessary procedures, equipment, and tools to limit and mitigate exposure to serious hazards Established mechanism to manage risk Organizations need to do all they can to cultivate and enable the culture and community of safety.
