1 EQ: WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS?

2 Things to think about: What is the sun’s role in photosynthesis?
2. What type of energy conversion occurs in photosynthesis? 3. What are the reactants and products of photosynthesis? 4. Why is photosynthesis necessary to life on Earth? 5. How can photosynthesis be observed? READ ONLY

3 Photosynthesis Process where radiant energy (from the sun) is used to turn water and carbon dioxide into chemical energy (glucose). Oxygen is a plant’s waste product that is released during this process.

4 Formula for photosynthesis
Copy the full formula, with compounds and names

5 Question: Is photosynthesis a physical or chemical reaction?
READ ONLY Is photosynthesis a physical or chemical reaction? Physical Change Chemical Change Changes size/shape Permanent Dissolves Creates a new substance Changes phase Gas production (bubbles) Unexpected color change Temperature change

6 Answer: Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction because it creates new substances Oxygen and Glucose (sugar) are NEW substances, the PRODUCTS of photosynthesis

7 Chloroplasts Chlorophyll
are the organelles of a plant cell WHERE photosynthesis occurs. Chloroplasts are in plant cells ONLY (plants can photosynthesize while animals cannot) Chlorophyll is the chemical in chloroplasts that give plants their green color.

8 Each plant cell has NUMEROUS chloroplasts.
Read Only

9 Stoma Openings/spaces on the undersides of leaves that allows gas exchange. This allows Carbon Dioxide to enter the leaf and allows Oxygen to be given off as waste) The problem is that the air spaces in the leaf are saturated with water, which exits the leaf through the stomata. Therefore, plants cannot gain carbon dioxide without simultaneously losing water. Read Only

10 Why is photosynthesis important to us?
Consumers get their energy from eating producers 90% of ALL oxygen on Earth is produced through Photosynthesis

11 Answer the following in a complete sentence:
If there wasn’t photosynthesis, there wouldn’t be plants. Therefore, what would happen to animals and plants? Why? Sentence Starter: If there wasn’t photosynthesis ______________ ______________________________________ would happen to plants and animals because ______________________________________

12 Reactants and Products
REACT TO START A REACTION PRODUCTS ARE PRODUCED (made) during a reaction LABEL THE REACTANTS AND PRODUCTS IN THE PHOTOSYNTHESIS FORUMULA

13 Draw this picture into your notebook. Take up about a ½ of a page.
There is an energy transformation in Photosynthesis in which ___________ energy is converted into ___________ energy. On-Level Assignment: Photosynthesis Summary: Write this sentence and fill in the blanks. Draw this picture into your notebook. Take up about a ½ of a page. Write a summary describing the process of photosynthesis using ALL of the words below: Photosynthesis Chloroplasts Energy transformation Gas Exchange Stoma Waste product Reactants Products Producer/ autotroph Consumer/ heterotroph

14 Write this sentence and fill in the blanks.
