1 Luke 17:1-10 It’s Gonna Happen, But…

2 Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they come! 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 So watch yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4 And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.” 5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6 He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

3 7 “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep
7 “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? 8 Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? 9 Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

4 Luke 17:1-10 It’s Gonna Happen, But…

5 It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they come!

6 It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they come!
2 Tim 2: Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.  And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.  Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,  and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

7 :1-2 Don’t Cause Offense – Step Up
Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they come! 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.

8 :1-2 Don’t Cause Offense – Step Up
If an enemy were insulting me,     I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me,     I could hide.  But it is you, a man like myself,     my companion, my close friend,  with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship     at the house of God, as we walked about     among the worshipers. Ps 55:12-14

9 :1-2 Don’t Cause Offense – Step Up
Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.

10 Heb 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone
:1-2 Don’t Cause Offense – Step Up Heb 12:14  Make every effort to live in peace with everyone  Rom 12:18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Rom 14:13,19 make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister…Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

11 :1-2 Don’t Cause Offense – Step Up
Matt 17:25-27 When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”  “From others,” Peter answered. “Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him.  “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

12 :3 Don’t Cover Offense – Speak Out
So watch yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.

13 :3 Don’t Cover Offense – Speak Out
Matt 5:23-24 Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you,  leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins
