1 Welcome to the UCI 4-Week Conversation & Culture Program

3 Core classes begin on Monday, February 8, at 9:00 a.m.
Please meet in front of the ESL office to get your class schedule. Then we’ll take you to your classroom. Full-time students come to the ESL Office at 8:30. Your classes begin at 9:00. Part-time students in a university group program come to the ESL Office at 9:30. Your classes begin at 10:00.

4 Monday, February 15 is a holiday (Presidents’ Day).
No classes will meet.

The levels in our program have letters as names. Level A: Beginning Level B: High beginning Level C: Low intermediate Level D: Intermediate Level E: High intermediate Level F: Advanced

8 Placement Today you will take a test to decide your level
Placement Today you will take a test to decide your level. The test has 100 questions about listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading.

9 Attendance Policy Please attend class every day so that…
You will learn as much as possible. You won’t have any visa problems. You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program.

10 Attendance Policy If you miss more than 14 total hours of core classes… You will not receive a certificate of completion. You will be dismissed from the program.

11 Lateness Policy Less than 10 minutes late = Tardy
10+ minutes late = 1 hour absence 3 Tardies = I hour absence

12 No-smoking policy: Smoking is not allowed anywhere at UCI.

14 Morning Class Grading:
Morning classes receive letter grades. A = 90%-100% B = 80%-89% C = 73%-79% Failing = below 73% D = 60% - 72% F = < 60%

15 Part-time students If you are a part-time student…
If you have a tourist visa (not a student visa) and If you’re not part of a university group Please come and talk to me in the ESL Office about which classes you will take.

16 All CC classes will go on a field trip to Huntington Beach on Friday, February 19 (instead of classes).

17 Institutional TOEFL Test
Paper and pencil test. Tuesday, March 1, 2:00 pm The test is free. The test is optional. You may sign up for the test online at The last day to sign up is Feb. 12.

18 Afternoon Elective Classes
Some are Monday / Wednesday Some are Tuesday / Thursday 2:00-3:20 pm (6 class meetings) Full-time students may take 1, 2, or no electives. Part-time students normally will not take electives.

19 Today you will tell us which elective classes you want
Today you will tell us which elective classes you want. You will receive your elective schedule in your morning class on Tuesday, February 9. Elective classes begin that same afternoon.

20 After the first elective class meeting, you may drop an elective class if you wish, but you may not add a different one in its place. The deadline for dropping an elective class is February 23.

21 Elective Class Grading:
Grading for electives is Pass/No Pass. To receive a “Pass” grade… You may miss no more than one class meeting. You must participate well.
