1 Leadership Skills for Non-Profit Managers April 25, 2017
Nancy Chandler, MSW

2 I want you to think of someone in your life who you consider to be a great leader…. Give me one word that best describes that person.

3 5 Primary types of leaders
Innovator Developer Activator Maximizer Stabilizer

4

5 How do these leadership types fit within how our programs are built, maintained, and enhanced?

6

7 9 Traits that define great Leadership
Awareness Decisiveness Empathy Accountability Confidence Optimism Honesty Focus Inspiration And I would add a 10th

8 Presence You must be present both literally and physically
Management by “walking around” Communicating the vision Responsible for the energy level Able to focus on present and ignore distractions

9 Look! A Squirrel!!

10 What do you consider your most important leadership trait?

11 Draw a circle with you in the middle, then name (by name or initials or job titles), people you are supposed to be able to lead/persuade, and then connect them to you by either a solid line or a dotted line. YOU

12 Henry, our party’s in total chaos
Henry, our party’s in total chaos! No one knows where to eat, where to stand, where to…Oh Thank God! Here comes a border collie!

13 What types of people do you work with?
Go-Getters Coasters Slackers These are the real pros who are constantly stepping up. They grabbed onto the vision and are ready to make it real. They want to try new things, learn new things, put the things they have learned into practice. They want the whole team to be successful. These are the “make no waves/take no chances” workers. They show up and do their jobs, but really don’t want to do much more than that. They have a job, not a passion for the work. Willing to do more if pushed or prodded but clear that if it all falls apart…it wasn’t their idea! These folks do just enough to get by and only exert themselves when others are watching or when it will be abundantly clear that they didn’t do something they were supposed to do. When something goes wrong, it is always someone else’s fault.

14 What percentage of the people you work with fall into one of these three categories?
Go-getters: _______________% Coasters: Slackers:

15 How do we motivate people to do the work?
Building and Maintaining Trust A leader that has your back and looks out for the best interests of others. Doing what you say you are going to do and being transparent. Helping Others Succeed Helping others to learn and improve their skills. Get involved and understand what others want to do and achieve. Letting others know of their gifts and abilities. Give others a chance to soar.

16 What are the challenges in motivating someone who is much younger/older than you?

17

18 Communication!

19 Boomers Millennials Family life Cleaver Family Education Birthright
Work Ethic Driven/quality Focus Relationships Technology Acquired Workplace view of authority Time = Authority View on Time at Work Work, work, work, be visible Work/life Balance Fear of taking too much time away Latch Key Merged families A way to get there $$$$$$$$$$$ Self Reliant Multi-tasking Tasks – Global Networked Assimilated Integral Skeptical/Testing Will seek guidance Project Oriented Paid to get job done Effective, but often something that fills time between weekends Clearer balance Plus community involvement and self development

20 What ways have you found to motivate those that you work with?

21 You know that you are doing the right thing.

22 As a Leader, you have two primary jobs:
Leave the organization better than you found it…. Leave people better off than you found them…

23 “Anyone can hold the helm when the seas are calm
“Anyone can hold the helm when the seas are calm. Being a leader isn’t about being perfect. It’s about weathering the storm and carrying on.” Captain Chandler….The Last Ship
