3. Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs)
SB1440 (Padilla) was signed Sept 2010
To earn an “associate degree for transfer” a student must complete 60 transferable semester units that include:
IGETC or CSU General Education requirements
18 or more units in a major or area of emphasis, as defined by the CCC
No additional local graduation requirements
Minimum GPA of 2.0
IGETC/CSU GE Breadth for STEM may only be used for identified majors.

4. Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs)
Student Benefits
Guaranteed admission with junior status to a CSU campus
CSU must accept all 60 transferable units that make up the degree
CSU must enable the student to complete the baccalaureate degree within 60 units
CSU cannot require the student to repeat courses that are similar to those already taken at the community college

5. Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs)
Transfer Model Curriculum (TMCs)
Developed & vetted intersegmentally (faculty from CCC and CSU)
Built on the C-ID system
Provides for some uniformity as well as local options
“Core” requirements
Faculty can narrow the course options or pass choices on to students.
Some TMCs are narrow and more prescriptive; others are more open. It depends on the discipline.

218 degrees are in pending status or not submitted
Some are in chemistry, computer science and biology due to high unit

Unlike previous TMCs, no college is required to create an ADT aligned to Social Justice Studies and Global Studies.

9. What if we don’t meet all ADT obligations?
Will colleges be required to discontinue local degrees?
NO!
Will local degrees be deleted by the Chancellor’s Office?
Should colleges discontinue local degrees after adopting ADTs?
That’s a local decision.
What should colleges do then?
Do what is best for students!

10. Model Curriculum
Model curriculum (MC) is a curricular structure collaboratively developed by discipline faculty for a certificate or a degree that specifies the required and optional courses that comprise a locally offered degree or certificate that is recognized statewide as MC-aligned.

12. But Why Have Model Curriculum?
Possibilities include:
Transfer benefits to students when universities recognize an MC and offer students locally-defined benefits
Establish appropriate program consistency in awards across the colleges
Facilitate student goal completion by simplifying student movement between colleges
Honor completed coursework through reciprocity
No 60 unit restriction
Meet Strong Workforce program requirement to facilitate CTE curricular portability

13. UC Transfer Pathways
Fall 2012 – half of the students transfer to UC came from less than 20% of the California community colleges
Fall 2013 – UC President Janet Napolitano convened a Transfer Action Team of UC faculty, staff and students to address the transfer issue
May 2014 – the Transfer Action Team published a set of recommendations which included “strengthen and streamline transfer pathways”
June 2015 – The UC Transfer Pathways were approved by the UC system.

No additional pathways are anticipated at this time.

15. UC Transfer Pathways
Each UC Transfer Pathway outlines the set of courses students should take to be competitive for admission to any UC campus.
Some campuses may require fewer courses for admission, but none will require more. NOTE: campuses may have grade requirements for particular courses
Completion of a UC Transfer Pathway does not guarantee entrance or admission to a UC campus.

17. UC Transfer Pathways
The UC Transfer Pathway is not a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) [students may only sign up for one TAG and TAGs are not offered at Berkeley, UCLA, and San Diego campuses.]
Students may pursue a UC Transfer Pathway and work toward a TAG at the same time.
The primary benefit – students who complete a UC Transfer Pathway have completed the major preparation courses for all of the 9 UC campuses.

18. UC Transfer Pathways
The UC Transfer Pathways are not Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs)
UC Transfer Pathways have no unit limit since they are major courses – no specific general education requirements
UC Transfer Pathways may be quite similar to TMC for some majors.

23. Articulation UC Pathways and Articulation:
Provide updated course outlines to UC.
Course outlines are also aligned with C-ID, CSU GE, IGETC, lower division major.
Verify information on assist.org is consistent to UC Transfer Pathways website.
Train counselors, discipline faculty, and students.

24. Articulation ADTs and Articulation:
Need C-ID approval before submitting ADT to Chancellor’s Office.
Need to provide articulation for lower division major preparation or approved for CSU GE-B/IGETC.
Course outline should also align with UC, IGETC, CSU GE and/or lower division major.
Train counselors, discipline faculty, and students.

25. Challenges for STEM Students
Courses are highly sequential and prerequisite driven.
Example 1: Calculus 1 Calculus II Calculus III
Example 2: Gen Chem I Gen Chem II Organic Chem I Organic Chem II
Courses from other disciplines are often prerequisites.
Example 1: Calculus I Physics for Science/Engineering I
Example 2: Gen Chem I Molecular and Cell Biology
Courses from other disciplines are often lower division major prep requirements.
Example 1: Physics requires completion of Calculus sequence, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, and at least one semester of General Chemistry
Example 2: Geology typically requires completion of a Physics, Calculus, and General Chemistry Sequence.

26. STEM Completion - Food for Thought
Starting upper division coursework is dependent on completion of lower division major prep coursework.
Enabling STEM students to complete their major prep coursework before transfer requires major advising and enrollment management practices that recognize these challenges.
Discipline faculty working together with counseling faculty can help STEM students navigate the differences between ADTs and UC Transfer Pathways, and the GE requirements.
