WAVE OF CHANGE I’d like to thank Governor Linda Cahill from Desert Coast Region for sharing her suggestions on how to prepare to be a past Governor. Linda is a human relations professional with a focus on leadership development. I think we will find her suggestions very relevant for the coming year and beyond. PREPARING for PAST GOVERNOR

2 TOP TEN Stop - take stock of what has happened in the past year

8. Evaluate How did you do against your region strategic plan? Are the goals and strategies still working? Do you need to modify any to stay mission- focused and continue to increase SIA’s Collective Impact? EVALUATE Based on your region strategic plan. How did you do? Are the goals and strategies you set still working? Do you need to add, delete, or modify any of these in order to stay mission-focused? 5 TOP TEN 7. Clarify Your Purpose
With leadership team answer three questions: What is specific job region members want you to do? How do region & clubs connect to SIA’s mission & strategy? How do region & clubs contribute to economics/ resources of SIA? MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO ENSURE MISSION-FOCUSED Now that you have taken a good look at your year, it’s time to once again CLARIFY YOUR PURPOSE. Work with your leadership team to answer these three questions: What is the specific job your region members want you to do? How do your region and clubs connect with the organization’s mission and strategy? How do your region and clubs contribute to the economics/ resources of the organization? 6 Paint a Picture that Inspires!
TOP TEN 6. Clarify Your Vision Your purpose is value you provide to those you serve. Your vision is what team purpose is with excellence. Purpose is fundamentally clear, concise & compelling Paint a Picture that Inspires! # 6 CLARIFY YOUR VISION Your purpose is the value you provide to those you serve, so you want to make sure you have a clear vision of what that is. Your vision is what your team purpose looks like when achieved with excellence. When the purpose is fundamentally clear, concise and compelling, then members really want to be a part of it. And when they want to be a part, then they will stop at nothing to help achieve that purpose. So paint a picture that inspires! 7 TOP TEN 5. Unleash Your Leadership Team’s Talents
Help them find their “Voice” Passion – What do I love doing? Talent – What do I do best? Need – What is the Need? Conscience – What should I do? #5 UNLEASH YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM’s TALENTS Once you have clarified your purpose and vision (identified the results you want to achieve), your next job is to unleash the talent and passion of your leadership team so that you can create those results together. Help them to find their ‘Voice’ so that they are ready to use it to make their unique contributions. There are four elements to Voice: Passion – What do I love doing? Talent – What do I do best? Need – What is the need? Conscience – What should I do? At the intersection of these four questions lies the contribution that each team member is best suited to make. Help each to identify her best talents to fulfill her passion to do the right thing SIA, for your region, and for the women and girls you serve. 8 Have each team member create her individual contribution statement
TOP TEN 4. Create Individual Contribution Statements Have each team member create her individual contribution statement Defines what she will do within her leadership role to ensure your region continues to move forward and contributes to shaping the future of Soroptimist #4 – CREATE INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS Your job now is to help your leadership team to translate their individual talents and passions into results. When one engages in work that taps into her talent, fuels her passion and rises out of a clear need in the world that her conscience draws her to meet, she finds her Voice – her unique contribution. Have each team member create her individual contribution statement that defines what she will do within her leadership role to ensure your region continues to move forward and contributes to shaping the future of Soroptimist.

9 TOP TEN 3. Share Your Knowledge
Share information with your Governor-elect, region leadership teams, club presidents and individual members. Have systems in place to allow and encourage distribution of information throughout your region. #3 – SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE Make sure you share the knowledge As governor, you receive a lot of information. It does little good to keep it to yourself. Make sure you share all you can with your Governor-elect, your region leadership teams, with your club presidents, and with individual members. Make sure you have systems in place that not only allow, but also encourage the distribution of information throughout your region.

Pass it on  Make sure future leaders have the tools to be successful  Hold a “Pass It On” party at the end of your biennium  Your mentoring responsibilities don’t end with your biennium  Be a valuable supporter and resource to your region’s new leadership PASS IT ON As a leader, you have a vested interest in ensuring that your successors are successful. So make sure you pass it all on to the next in line. You have been working to develop future leaders – now make sure that they have all the tools they need to be successful. Hold a ‘Pass It On’ party at the end of your biennium – have the outgoing Board share with the incoming Board all their materials and resources. Your mentoring responsibilities don’t end with the biennium – make yourselves available to your successors, when requested. You will want to be a valuable supporter and resource to your region’s new leadership.

11 TOP TEN 1. Sit Back and Enjoy
 Celebrate your accomplishments as a region and a leader.  Step back and let your successors enter the spotlight.  Let them shine!  Sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor – knowing you helped increase SIA’s collective impact in countries and territories we serve. SIT BACK AND ENJOY At this time next year, your job as governor will come to an end. You have prepared well for this much-deserved ‘retirement’. Celebrate your accomplishments as a region and as leaders. Then step back and let your successors enter the spotlight. Let them shine, as you sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor knowing that you helped increase SIA’s collective impact in the 19 countries and territories we serve insuring the Soroptimist legacy long into the future.

12 As we bring this Governor's Round Table to a close…I can’t thank you enough for your dedication, hard work and enthusiasm. I’m so excited for all of you…this is truly a great time to be a Soroptimist. Thank you for being here today…and thank you for your leadership in Soroptimist. Together we will realize a world where women and girls have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential and live their dreams!
