Today, health care systems include the many agencies, facilities, and personnel involved in the delivery of health care. Health care is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the US. This industry employs over 13 million people. _______________________

4 Government Agencies In addition to the government health care facilities, other health care services are offered at international, national, state, and local levels. ________________.

5 Government Agencies Us Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) Deals with health problems in US National Institutes of Health: Research on diseases Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: concerned with causes and control of diseases in populations. The cost of health care is a major concern of everyone who needs health services. Health care costs are increasing much faster then other cost of living. __________________________________. Without insurance, the cost of an illness can mean financial disaster for an individual or family. Health care plans are offered by several thousand insurance agencies.

Deductibles: Amounts that must be paid by the patient for medical services before the policy begins to pay Co-Insurance: requires that specific percentages of expenses are shared by the patient and insurance company, Co-payment: _____________________________

10 Insurance Preferred provider organization (PPO): Type of managed care health insurance plan usually provided by large industries or companies to their employees. Health maintenance organization (HMO): _______________________________________ Affordable Care Act: Obamacare: intended to increase health insurance quality and affordability, lower the uninsured rate by expanding insurance coverage and reduce the costs of healthcare. Allows children to stay on parents insurance till their 26th birthday.

11 Insurance Medicare: federal government program that provides health care for almost all individuals over the age of 65, for any person with a disability in which they are receiving social security and for any person with end stage kidney disease. Medigap: policies are health insurance plans that help pay expenses not covered by Medicare. Medicaid: Medical assistance program that is jointly funded by the federal and state governments, but operated by individual states. ________________________________

12 Insurance Worker’s Comp: Health insurance plan providing treatment for workers injured on the job. TRICARE: US Government health insurance plan for all military personnel. Managed care is an approach that has developed in response to rising health care costs. Employers, as well as insurance companies who pay large medical bills, want to ensure that such money is spent efficiently rather than wastefully. _______________________________________

13 HIPPA Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
5 main components: Health care access, portability and renewability: limits exclusions on preexisting conditions to allow for the continuance of insurance even with job changes. Preventing Health care fraud and abuse: establishes methods for preventing fraud and abuse and imposes sanctions or penalties if fraud or abuse does occur, reduces the cost and administration. Tax- Related health provisions: promotes the use of medical savings accounts by allowing tax deductions for monies placed in accounts. Application and Enforcement of Group Health: Establishes standards that require group health care plans to offer portability, access and renewability to all members. Revenue Offsets: __________________________________ Compliance with all HIPAA regulations was required by April 2004 for all health care agencies. These regulations have not solved but have provided costumers with more access to insurance and greater confidentially in regard to medical records.

14 Organizational Structure
All health care facilities must have some type of organizational structure. The structure may be complex, as in larger facilities, or simple, as in smaller facilities. _____________________________________ The organizational structure should indicate areas of responsibility and lead to the most efficient operation of the facility.
