4 Role SW The chief timekeeper shall assign the seating positions for all timekeepers and the lanes for which they are responsible. It is advisable that there shall be three (3) timekeepers for each lane. If Automatic Officiating Equipment is not used, there shall be two (2) additional timekeepers designated, either of whom shall be directed to replace a timekeeper whose watch did not start or stopped during an event, or who for any other reason is not able to record the time. When using three (3) digital watches per lane, final time and place is determined by time.

5 Role SW When only (1) timekeeper per lane is available, an extra timer must be assigned in case of a malfunction of a stopwatch. In addition the Chief Timerkeeper must always record the time of the winner of each heat SW The chief timekeeper shall collect from the timekeepers in each lane a card showing the time recorded and, if necessary, inspect their watches.

6 Before the session Report to the officials coordinator of the meet at least 1 hour prior to the start of the session Receive the instructions of the referee: Specificities of the session Timing system used Protocol and session start time Instructions for the timers Help with the stopwatches distribution Validate that they are working properly

7 Before the session Assign timers to the lanes
Recruit new timers if required… Assign one person per lane that to be responsible (will among things note the times) Provide instruction to the timers (briefing) See the briefing guideline Ensure that all timers have the proper material and are ready to start the session on time

8 During the session Ensure that all timers are on duty and working as instructed Taking the final time of the first swimmer of each heats (provide time if less than 3 good times are available) When possible and necessary, get the swimmers’ final times Randomly check the times of the timers

9 During the session Making sure swimmers of the next heat are advancing behind the blocks Ensure that the timers’ view of the starter is not blocked during the starts Ensure that alternate timers as will as those not having any swimmers in the heat are starting their watch

10 During the session After the finish of a race, ensure that swimmers are staying in the water or leaving the pool based on the instructions received For relay events, ensure that the swimmers finishing their leg are clearing the pool quickly Replace or assign a replacement for a timer if needed

11 During the session When there is a possibility for a record or a request for an official split time, ensure that at least 3 timers are taking the time for this swimmer / lap Ensure that the timers are staying in case there is a swim-off at the end of a session Check on a regular basis with the chief finish judge that the cards are filled correctly / times are coherent in the lanes

12 During the session Have extra watches and pencils for replacements during the session Starting only one watch at the time

13 After the session Thank all the timers Gather and organize the timers’ material Control that all watches have been returned Hand back the material to the meet management

16 Conclusion... Any question?? Let’s do the exam!

17 Exam Before the start of a meet the Chief Timekeeper shall:
check that all watches are in good working order; issue watches to Timers; brief Timers regarding their duties; assign an individual in each lane to judge relay takeovers; assign Head Lane Timers; issue bells (where appropriate); arrange with the Starter to conduct a "watch check"; establish working signals with the Referee.

18 Exam 2. The Chief Timekeeper shall:
take the finish time of the winner of each heat; position himself so that he can observe the finish of all the swimmers in a heat; make his own tabulation of the order of finish of each heat; disqualify swimmers for turn infractions which he observes; signal all Timers to clear and reset their watches; check all recorded times of the winner of each heat;

19 Exam 2. The Chief Timekeeper shall:
affix his time, when necessary, on the time card of the winner of a heat or final; satisfy himself that all Timers are competent; tabulate lengths completed in long distance races; have the authority to disqualify; have one or two Assistants; have the authority to over-rule an automatic time and replace it with a manual time; have extra watches/batteries available;

20 Exam 2. The Chief Timekeeper shall:
assign Timers to take split or record-attempt times; start at least two watches for each race; examine all the time cards; ensure that at least one extra watch is started for each race. alert the head lane timer and/or timers to location of times and signatures when meet has both preliminaries and time final events.

21 Exam 3. In long distance events when there is a bell-lap, the Chief Timekeeper shall: delegate responsibility for tabulating lengths and ringing the bell to each Head Lane Timer; verify the tabulation of completed lengths with the assigned Lane Timer and Referee before authorizing the bell to be rung.

22 06/05/2018 Exam 4. When an automatic judging and timing system with electronic touch-pads is in use: it is necessary to have a full complement of Lane Timers on duty unless another approved backup system is available; it is necessary to have a full complement of Lane Timers on standby in the officials' room, in the event of a malfunction; the Lane Timer will transcribe the automatic times onto the time cards. Rendue là…

23 Exam 5. In developmental meets, the minimum number of Timers that should be assigned to each working lane of the pool is: two; one; three. three in any integrated meet where a swimmer with a disability is in the lane.

24 Exam 6. The following times were measured on manually operated digital watches. Determine the official times for each swim: 1:01.32 – 1:01.39 – 1: :01.39 1:10.67 – 1: :10.78 4:03.47 – 4:03.26 – 4: :03.47 1:00.03 – 2:12.04 – 2: : :12:04 2:21.34 – 2: :21.15 4:18.07 – 4: :18.24

25 Exam 7. The Chief Timekeeper shall instruct the Head Lane Timekeeper to ensure that: the correct swimmer is in his assigned lane; the correct time card is being used; the correct times are being read and recorded; all times are recorded to 100ths of a second; in manually timed meets, official times are correctly calculated and recorded (when so directed); preliminary, final and split times are recorded on the time card, as directed; in Relay events the swimmers compete in the correct order.

26 Exam 8. The Chief Timekeeper should instruct the Head Lane Timekeepers to ensure that: one timer is assigned to take split times; the Chief Finish Judge is informed in the appropriate manner if a swimmer fails to touch the touchpad or touches it lightly; relay take-over infractions are reported to the Referee; a swimmer's manual backup times are adjusted to agree with the automatic times

27 Exam 9. During a short course relay, an official split is taken:
by all timers assigned to a lane; at the completion of the first leg of a 4 x 50 m relay; at the completion of each swimmer's leg of the relay; at the end of the first leg of a 4 x 100 m relay.

28 Exam 10. In a manually timed meet, long course, an official split at 50 m of a 200 m relay event is taken: a) by having all timers move to the 50 m end of the pool for the start of each heat, then return to the finish end for the remainder of the meet; b) when there are sufficient timers and watches to staff both ends of the meet; c) when a coach requests an official split and there are sufficient timers and watches to staff the lane(s) in question;
