1 Using Adjectives to Describe: Gender Agreement
This information can be found on page 92 & 93 of your book.

2 Gender Agreement (pg. 93) You already know that every word in Spanish has a gender: masculine or feminine. El chico = masculine El vestido (dress) = masculine La chica = feminine La camisa (shirt) = feminine

3 Gender Agreement Adjectives describe nouns.
Ex: the fast car, the red dress, the happy girl. Like the definite (el, la, los, las) and indefinite articles (un,unos, una, unas), the adjectives will also “agree” or “match” with the noun it describes based on: gender Masculine / feminine Number Singular (one) / plural (more than one)

4 Gender Agreement (pg. 93) ADJECTIVE AFTER!!!!
In English, you say “the red shirt.” In Spanish, you need to do the following: Decide the gender of the noun. Decide the number of the noun. Form the adjective to match. Put the adjective AFTER the noun. (This is almost always the rule in Spanish) ADJECTIVE AFTER!!!!

5 adjectives ending in –o serio serios seria serias
masculine, singular plural feminine, adjectives ending in –o serio serios  seria  serias  adjectives ending in –e interesante interesantes  interesante  adjectives ending in consonant azul azules  azul  adjectives ending in –ador, nationality trabajador trabajadores  trabajadora  trabajadoras

6 Gender Agreement (pg. 93) So, “The red shirt.” The shirt = la camisa.
red = rojo. 1.Gender of the noun? La camisa = feminine 2. Number? One shirt = singular. 3. I need to form the adjective to agree with the noun. Make rojo feminine = roja. 4. Put the adjective after the noun: La camisa roja.

7 What if it’s plural???? Let’s try “The black pants.” Los pantalones = pants. Negro = black. 1. Gender? Los = masculine. 2. Number? Los is plural, because “el” is the article for a singular masculine noun. The adjective has to become masculine and plural. Negro -> negros. Adjective After = Los pantalones negros.

8 Gender Agreement (pg 59) Note: For adjectives that end in “e,” they usually match both genders: El chico paciente, la chica paciente. El sombrero verde, la falda verde. Many adjectives that end with a consonant match both genders: El sombrero azul, la falda azul. Some add “a” to become feminine. These adjectives must be learned. El chico trabajador, La chica trabajadora.

9 Gender Agreement Your turn! Use your vocab lists to describe the following: The yellow dress= El vestido amarillo 2.The red shirts. ___________________ 3.The blue skirt. ___________________ The blonde girl. _______________ 5. The orange pants. ________________

10 Gender Agreement Using SER to describe something:
You can use “ser” plus the adjective to describe a noun. Remember, you use “es” for one object, “son” for more than one. The shirt is red = La camisa es roja. The shoes are black = Los zapatos son negros.

11 Gender Agreement The dress is white. ___El vestido es blanco.__
2. The shirts are blue. ____Las camisas son azules.___ 3. The skirt is red. ___La falda es roja.___ The sweater is purple. __El suéter es morado.____ The pants are orange. ____Los pantalones son anaranjados.___

12 Gender Agreement Let’s throw in some indefinite articles:
A brown jacket. __________________________ 2. Some white skirts. ____________________ 3. A green hat. 4. Some orange pants. ______________________

13 Gender Agreement Mix-up! Try these with a partner:
The sweater is white. The girl is hard-working. The teacher (m) is boring. The blue pants. The jacket is purple. Some yellow sweaters.
