0 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – Egypt
Interconnection May 10, 2017

1 Population – 2015 (Million)(2) Energy Generated (TWh) (1)
Country Profiles/Statistics MW KSA Egypt Area (million km2) Population – 2015 (Million)(2) Peak Demand (GW) (1) Energy Generated (TWh) (1) Saudi Arabia 2.15 31.5 61 366.8 Egypt 1.01 91.5 28 174.9 (1): KSA-2016 and EGY-2015 (EEHC – 2015 Report) (2): World Bank – 2015 data

2 KSA-EGY Interconnection: Why?
Load Curve Peak in KSA: day-time and in Egypt: night- time Peak shaving up to 3,000 MW Avoided cost: expensive peaking units Reduce reserve margin Increase systems reliability

3 Project - Layout The project is in the bidding stage;
Badr (EGY) TBK (KSA) MDE Map Physical The project is in the bidding stage; the first Madinah-Bader circuit is supposed to be in service by 2020

4 Technical and economic studies proved the feasibility of the project
Project - Components Target Transfer: 3,000 MW between KSA and EGY Converter stations: KSA: 3,000 MW at MDE and 1,500 MW at TBK EGY: 3,000 MW Badr Overhead Transmission Lines: 1,240 km – 500 kV HVDC (KSA: 853 km and EGY: 387 km) Submarine Cable: 16 km – 500 kV HVDC Technical and economic studies proved the feasibility of the project

5 KSA: Generation Mix by 2020 & 2030
Capacity Mix 2020 in KSA Capacity Mix 2030 in KSA 2020 (%) Fuel 2030 (%) 56 NG 68 14 LCO 8 18 HFO 15 4 RES 6 Others 2 NG: Natural Gas HFO: Heavy Fuel Oil LCO: Light Crude Oil RES: Renewable Energy Resources

6 Example of Exchange in a Peak Day
