The pragmatic aspect of inversion in “Pride and prejudice” by Jane Austen Made by Evgenia Demidenko

2 Aim of the work The aim of the work is to explore inversion pragmatic peculiarities. To reach this goal we have considered the following tasks: 1. To define inversion functions. 2. To follow how inversion takes part in emotional and expressive sentences. 3. To define all types of inversion expressions from the novel and analyze them.

3 Grammar aspect of inversion
‘If he had had any compassion for me,’ cried her husband impatiently, ‘ he would not have danced half so much!...’ In a country neighbourhood you move in a very confined and unvarying society. However, he wrote some verses on her, and very pretty they were. By Jane, this attention was received with the greatest pleasure, but Elizabeth still saw superciliousness in their treatment of everybody, hardly excepting even her sister, and could not like them; though their kindness to Jane, such as it was, had a value as arising in all probability from the influence of their brother’s admiration.

To this Mary very gravely replied, "Far be it from me, my dear sister, to depreciate such pleasures!" But of this answer Lydia heard not a word. Mr. Darcy's letter she was in a fair way of soon knowing by heart.

7 Intensification function
With a book he was regardless of time; and on the present occasion he had a good deal of curiosity as to the events of an evening which had raised such splendid expectations. Never in her life had she seen his manners so little dignified, never had he spoken with such gentleness as on this unexpected meeting.

9 Emotional and estimate function of inversion
In the former were many good paintings; but Elizabeth knew nothing of the art: and from such as had been already visible below, she had willingly turned to look at some drawings of Miss Darcy's, in crayons, whose subjects were usually more interesting, and also more intelligible.
