1 How Might Hydrogen Fuel The Future
By T. Clayton Prestwood & Aaron Hunter How Might Hydrogen Fuel The Future

2 Advantages Disadvantages “Cleaner” emissions Storage
Foreign energy independence Colorless, odorless, tasteless, and noncorrosive Nontoxic to humans Storage Infrastucture Transportation Production Costs EXPLOSIVE!

3 Fuel Cells: Runs off of H2 and O2 gas. Produces an electrical current.
Skips heat conversion. High efficiency.

4 Fuel Cells (cont.)

5 Electrolysis of H2O Clean Inefficient Can be mass produced

6 Electrolysis of H2O

7 Example of Methane Reforming:
Natural gas (CH4) Pretreatment Reforming Water Shift Purification CH4 + H2O → CO + 3 H2 CO + H2O → CO2 + H2 Methane reforming CO2 Gas steam impurities 4H2 (Pure) CO2 + 4H2 CH4 Heat Heat CO + 3H2 H2O H2O Heat

8 H2O Splitting by heat: Uses high heat to split H2O.
Requires a Catalyst. Highly efficient. Groups with nuclear power plants.

9 H2O Splitting by heat: (NH4)2SO3(aq)+H2O→ (NH4)2SO4(aq)+H2(g)
