2 Quick Review! What does MLA stand for? What is the purpose of MLA?
What must you include the first time you use the source? What goes into parentheses the second time you use the source? John Smith writes in Technology: Developing Competent Students, “Learning how to use computer programs is now a survival skill in our society” (77). Topic: The Problem of Teenage Driver Safety Teenage drivers have more reported accidents as they are the least experienced drivers, are not as mature, and make more careless mistakes while on the road because of exercising poor judgment.

3 Introduction Checklist
Hook statements Quick summary Background information for topic Introduction of author and literary work Thesis statement

4 Writing Body Paragraphs

5 When in black, copy it down. When in red…you don’t!
What to Copy Down??? When in black, copy it down. When in red…you don’t!

6 Topic Sentence A topic sentence is a sentence that explains the idea you will discuss in that one paragraph. All topic sentences should be explanations of the subtopics in your thesis.

7 Analyze (Break Down) Your Thesis Statement.
Explain the history. Point #1 During the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel changes from a spiritual, sensitive little boy to a spiritually dead, unemotional man. Point #3 Point #2 Point #4 Point #5 Point #6 All subtopics/points need to be discussed in your essay. Each point will become a topic sentence.

8 Example: Thesis: During the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel changes from a spiritual, sensitive little boy to a spiritually dead, unemotional man. Topic sentence #1: Before the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel was an untypically spiritual young boy. Topic sentence#2: As a result of the atrocities Wiesel saw on a daily basis, his spiritual faith in God was strongly challenged.

9 PROVE YOUR THESIS! Interpret: To explain
In order to prove your thesis you must support your topic sentences with examples/ quotes from the literary work. Interpret: To explain

10 The Body Interpretation!!! When you use a quote you must provide an interpretation, not a summary, about how this quote is appropriate to the development of the topic and thesis. Interpret: To explain

11 Step 1 (Claim) Topic sentence—the main idea of the paragraph in a sentence.

12 Step 2 Explanation of topic sentence—Explain your topic/idea in further detail and how it relates to the thesis.

13 Step 3 Quote from text/Data—Give support or evidence for the idea and the explanation that came before it.

14 Step 4 Interpretation—the reasoning behind why you chose to use this particular example or quote as evidence to support the claim in your paragraph.

15 Step 5 Step 5 End the paragraph: Give the reader a one sentence summary/review.

16 Do Not Re-tell the Story!
The essay should be 25% summary and 75% response and analysis. Do not summarize the entire plot. You may summarize a scene if relevant to your interpretation. Interpretation not summarization!

17 Interpretation not summarization!
EXAMPLE… Before the Holocaust, Elie was untypically spiritual even for a young Jewish child. Elie prayed daily, read the Cabbala faithfully, and even attended the synagogue without his parents. In his memoir Night, Elie shares the intensity of his faith as he writes, “During the day I studied the Talmud, and at night I ran to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the temple” (1). At only twelve years of age, Elie’s best friend is his God and his favorite hobby is learning more about his faith and the Jewish laws. Wiesel shares with his readers His profound faith in God as a way to foreshadow the inevitable that his faith will be challenged as he believes that his Best Friend has betrayed him as he and his family is not protected from the Holocaust atrocities. Interpretation not summarization!
