Lesson Objectives To know the timeline of events up to the fall of the Wall. To understand the role played by Helmut Kohl in the reunification process

3 OSTPOLITIK Can you remember this from your previous lesson? What does it mean? How successful had it been between in 1960s and 1980s?

5 Examine the handout on: “The collapse of communism in eastern Europe”
Examine the map to understand the location of where Germany is in comparison to Hungary, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. 5 minutes to note down some of the key events that take place between May and November, 1989. You can do this in a timeline if it would help.

15 Interesting Side note….
During 1989 the best selling song in Germany was “I’m looking for Freedom” by David Hasselhoff. On new year’s eve, 7 weeks after the fall of the Berlin wall, Hasselhoff performed a concert next to the Brandenburg Gate and the remains of the Wall. He has subsequently claimed that it was the success of this concert that convinced Germans that they should be united.
