What is Disability Insurance? Who is eligible to enroll? NEW for 2017! All employees who are eligible for Full, Mid-level and Core benefits packages may enroll in Disability Insurance during Open Enrollment Postdoctoral Scholars: Those employed in a Postdoctoral Scholar title (Employee-3252, Fellow or Paid Direct-3254) are eligible for Postdoctoral Scholar Disability Insurance. Disability Insurance Plans for 2017 UC Paid Basic Disability 55% of your eligible monthly earnings, to a maximum of $800/month for up to 6 months-- 14 calendar day waiting period* Voluntary Short-Term Disability 60% of your eligible monthly earnings, to a maximum of $15,000/month for 6 months-- 14 calendar day waiting period* Voluntary Long-Term Disability 60% of your eligible monthly earnings, to a maximum of $15,000/month -- 6 month waiting period *Must use 22 days of sick leave if you have it 6 This presentation is intended for communication purposes only, it is not a guarantee of benefits. Considerations when choosing plans UC employees do not pay into CA State Disability Insurance* The only plans available to UC employees are the Basic, Voluntary Short-Term and Voluntary Long- Term Disability Insurance *If you have worked for UC for less than 18 months you may have residual SDI benefits from prior employment or concurrent employment 9 This presentation is intended for communication purposes only, it is not a guarantee of benefits. Considerations when choosing plans Do you have very little sick leave or do you have a lot of sick leave? Do you have Academic Paid Medical Leave? Can you live on $800/month, if needed? Are you planning on becoming pregnant? Do you have a long-term chronic medical condition? Are you planning to retire soon? Do you have a savings cushion? Do you have a lot of non-negotiable monthly expenses? Example- Uncomplicated Pregnancy An employee who accrues sick leave is having an uncomplicated Pregnancy and Delivery (she is off work 2 weeks prior to her due date and 6 weeks pp). She is enrolled in Voluntary Short-Term Disability and has 5 sick days accrued. 2 weeks prior to your due date and 6 weeks pp or 8 if c-section 14 calendar day waiting period 11 This presentation is intended for communication purposes only, it is not a guarantee of benefits. Example- Car Accident An employee who accrues sick leave was in a serious car accident and, as a result of their injuries, they are unable to work for three months (12 weeks). They earn $50,000 a year ($4167/month), have Basic Disability only and 15 sick days accrued. 15 days of sick time even though 14 calendar day waiting period How much are you going to get for Basic Disability Benefit = $800/month maximum 12 This presentation is intended for communication purposes only, it is not a guarantee of benefits. If you are enrolled in Supplemental Disability and do NOT take an action during Open Enrollment, you will automatically be enrolled in the Voluntary Short-Term and Voluntary Long-Term disability coverage. UCSB Disability Services How to enroll during Open Enrollment Log on to the Open Enrollment Application on At Your Service Online. Select Disability tab, then click on the box(s) for the coverage you wish to enroll in. Click “Confirm” If you don’t remember your username or password for AYSO, be sure to click forgot username/password. 3 failed attempts to log in will lock your account.
