1 Conclusions of the Mechanization Workshop
Okogbenin, E. Presentation at the: Integrated System for Effective Cassava production IITA, Ibadan, October 27, 2016

2 Outline Background Workshop Objectives Conclusions Recommendations

3 Background CAMAP initiated to maximize yield potential of improved varieties, expand production, & integrate best bet agronomic practices Address low mechanization in land preparation, planting, harvesting, loading, transportation and processing Access Cassava specific equipment for mechanization Production dominated by small holders and developing models to enhance their access to mechanization Improve Ag-business in the cassava value chain Successfully mechanized over 12000Ha for SHF and other stakeholders with yield increases over 30 tonnes

4 Workshop Objectives Build sustainable and commercially viable for profit farmers, equipment importers and mechanization service providers Design a program to recruit, train, and support network of importers and mechanization service providers Explore additional mechanization options Outscale and promote mechanized services to increase productivity

5 Workshop Summary (1) Mechanization access
Increase SHF access to mechanization through clustering, cooperatives, contract farming Land cleaning of existing farms via tractor stumping Government facilitated land clearing All possible categories of machines made available including low cost types Re-orient farmer mentality and improve maintenance Government to create enabling environment Advisory services from distributor

6 Workshop Summary (2) Sustainable mechanization
Ag Equip Hiring Enterprises Individual tractor owners Associations of tractor owners (2) Large farms that service neighbors State and Local govts that own tractors Private-led mechanization Create access to affordable financing Reduction in tariff of Ag. Machines Support local fabrication Establishment of Ag. zones

7 Workshop Summary (3) Inclusive innovative financing
Subsidize loan program Matching grants for farmers accessing mechanization – microfinance OEM buy-down interest rate Subsidize agric. loans Subsidize on income tax for farmers Policy Changes Service provider mobilization Direct fund intervention through distributors

8 Workshop Summary Women and youth Women clusters for gainful income
Giving youth sense of belonging and standard living conditions Demonstration of mechanization with them to create awareness and wealth Role modelling for youths.

9 Conclusion Mechanization is the path forward with key focus on SHF
Digital tracking of SHF to ensure connection with mechanization - Build a biometric revolution and SHF have biometric ID Build on existing systems: Associations and government programme for scaling AATF to facilitate enabling of scaling We have to be inclusive for new partners: connect SHF to mechanization through digital aggregation

10 Conclusion (2) AATF to intensify coaching and building of institutions to enhance sustainability Digital platform for providers to ensure SHF get services Explore financial systems in Nigeria to secure funding AATF is supporting through core funding and we are requesting BMGF investment for scaling to bring mechanization to SHF
