1 September 18 I can use commas correctly.
I can demonstrate my knowledge of denotation of words. I can annotate poetry.

2 Grammar Comma Rule # 5 A comma is used between coordinate adjectives not linked by a coordinating conjunction. Example: Thomas proved to be a competent, responsible assistant. Complete the handout for practice.

3 Vocabulary Answer the questions using the correct vocabulary word.
Adversity-misfortune Asylum- sanctuary Demagogue-rabble-rousing leader Extenuating-guilt diminishing Ephemeral-momentary, fleeting

4 We will all face times of adversity in our lifetime
We will all face times of adversity in our lifetime. Give an example and explain. Describe an asylum. Why? Name a famous demagogue. Why? Describe how the bathroom scales do not know extenuating circumstances. Name a trend that is ephemeral. Why?

5 Why Rosalie Did It While I read the poem to you, you jot down words you do not know. Next, we will discuss these words We will TPCASTT this poem together!

6 TPCASTT Title Paraphrase Connotation Attitude Shifts Theme

7 TWEET You will find a copy of the poem in the center of the butcher paper on your table or a table near you. When you have the signal to begin work you will… Report to the nearest table with the butcher paper Write a thought, reaction, finding, etc. somewhere on the paper. You may respond in writing to other “tweets” You may also go back and forth between groups

8 TWEET Guidelines You may NOT SPEAK during this activity, only TWEET!
I will also participate, so if I write a question you must answer it. You may go between groups to “post your tweets”. You need to write your initials beside your tweet, so that I know everyone got the chance to participate. You should tweet (write a thought, a reaction, comment or response to another tweet) at least 3 times.

9 My Father in the Navy Read the poem individually.
Annotate the poem using TP-CASTT, on your own. Answer the questions on your own paper. Pay close attention to “tone” and “narration”. TONE- how the author feels about the subject of the writing. Examine diction-the authors word choice. NARRATION- Who is the speaker and how do we know? What is the relationship between narrator and subject? How do we know?

10 Discuss the poem as a class. What is symbolism?
Symbolism- when something stands for something else. Go back and examine the poem again, looking for symbolism. Discuss

11 In your groups, look at the given question.
Examine all members answers and discuss thought process on how each member arrived at a particular answer. As a group, you must determine the correct answer and provide a justification of why it is the correct answer. Teach the class the correct answer and your group’s thought process on how you arrived at that answer.
