3 Roles of the Media Sport has many types of media… Can you name some of them? TV Internet Newspapers (local and national press) Magazines Radio News on TV Billboards There are 4 different roles of the media which are?

5 The Informative Role This is where the media gives live coverage, factual information and on radio and analysis of what happens in sport Results, reports, rules and rule changes, team analysis of performers’ behaviour, highlights and comments feature in newspapers and magazines, and on the radio and TV

6 The Entertainment Role
This is where we read about the private lives of stars and watch televised sport for its drama, skill and intensity of emotion Sport is central to the increasingly popular home entertainment industry

7 The Educative Role Documentary programmes give the opportunity for greater understanding of global sport In addition, the public can be educated about sporting skills, coaching techniques, contemporary sporting issues i.e. Drugs and developments in school and community sport Ethics of fair play can be reinforced through comment and behaviour of role models

8 The Advertising Role Sport is used either directly to advertise products such as crisps, beer and hair gel or indirectly through sponsorship Companies sponsor individuals, teams, leagues and events to heighten corporate awareness Preview programmes also promote events, in contrasts to the BBC, independent TV has always had to sell advertising in order to pay for itself

Sports people can make a lot of money due to sponsorship, prize money, advertisement etc. Individual sponsorship meaning that more people become interested in the sport due to the company sponsoring the athlete i.e. Usain Bolt, Formula 1 – Red Bull etc.

Myths and stereotypes can be broken e.g. women can play cricket! England vs Australia in The Ashes Due to the fact that women playing cricket is now being televised by the media more women wish to take part in Cricket

Lifelong involvement in physical activity increases e.g. different training methods everyday Balanced healthy lifestyles e.g. eating healthy so people can maintain their active lifestyle for their sport

Standards have improved Better coaches Better facilities Better players All attract new players and people to take up the sport

Clear results e.g. 20/20 matches so the game doesn’t end in a draw and bowl outs to decide who the winner is Television can show sports as a fair sport which is why many people are interested and/or become interested in it

Role Models due to athletes having positive impacts of others around them especially children causing them wanting to get involved in that sport

Money to go to sport through advertisement The national lottery put money into some sports in order for it to undergo which is being televised through the media

17 Negative Impacts of the Media on Sport
Rules, timings, seasons, format and structure can be changed in a negative way due to the media controlling the sport Myths and stereotypes can be forced if the coverage is poorly managed, or disproportionally in favour of one sport Bright lights, intrusive cameras can put performers off

18 Negative Impacts of the Media on Sport
Pay per view when certain channels are unavailable to watch people have to pay for the channel in order to watch a certain programme

19 Negative Impacts of the Media on Sport
Timeouts are encouraged in sport so advert breaks can be shown e.g. superbowl, a 30 second slot will cost $4.5 million 111 million viewers in 2016
