1 Energy and Development
Get out a sheet of notebook paper This is “I&D – 9”

2 Discussion Questions How does energy relate to development?
Where do you think the U.S. ranks in electricity consumption? What are the sources of energy? List as many as you can.

3 Energy and Development
Access to modern energy services is fundamental to fulfilling basic social needs, driving economic growth and fueling human development. This is because energy services have an effect on productivity, health, education, safe water and communication services. Modern services such as electricity, natural gas, modern cooking fuel and mechanical power are necessary for improved health and education, better access to information and agricultural productivity. There are wide variations between energy consumption of developed and developing countries, and between the rich and poor within countries, with attendant variations in human development. Furthermore, the way in which energy is generated, distributed and consumed affects the local, regional and global environment with serious implications for poor people’s livelihood strategies and human development prospects.

4 Energy is the raw material needed to fuel any country’s economy growth
Energy is the raw material needed to fuel any country’s economy growth. Advanced economies have the capacity to develop new sources of energy production or to secure imports of foreign energy to meet their needs. But many poorer countries lack this essential capacity. It is estimated that one third of the world’s population, about two billion people, are without access to “modern energy services: lights to read by, refrigeration to store medicines and food, transportation to get products to market, let alone telecommunications and information technology – all prerequisites for economic growth and poverty alleviation.”

10 Sustainable Development

11 “We all aspire to reach better living conditions
“We all aspire to reach better living conditions. Yet, this will not be possible by following the current growth model We need a practical twenty-first century development model that connects the dots between the key issues of our time: poverty reduction; job generation; inequality; climate change; environmental stress; water, energy and food security.” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

12 Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is about meeting the needs of people today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

13 Why is it important? Current patterns of consumption and production risk breaching planetary boundaries. If the natural environment undergoes significant degradation, so too does the potential to improve people’s lives— both in this and subsequent generations. This is especially true for the world’s poorest—most of whom rely directly upon nature for their livelihoods, and whose prospects are therefore most directly affected by the threats to ecosystems. Unless issues of equity and sustainability are properly addressed, current development trajectories could grind to a halt, or even go into reverse. Avoiding such outcomes will be the great challenge of the 21st century.

14 SUSTAINABILITY IS A TRANSITION
From •short-term thinking •an economy outside of nature •fossil fuels •seeing Environmental, social and economic challenges as separate and competing To •long-term thinking •an economy integrated with nature •renewable energy •seeing Environmental, social, and economic challenges as an interconnected whole
