1 CREATING A SOCIETY ACTIVITY Consider what we discussed point of view, empathy, and making connections between history and our own lives. The following activity will ask you to think of what kind of society you would like to live in. This is your opportunity to make right what you think is wrong with society – to create a place where you want to live! However, you may also find out that that your peers may have a different ideas than you. LABEL A PIECE OF BINDER PAPER: ASSIGNMENT #1: CREATING A SOCIETY

2 Part I: Looking at our own society
Brainstorm a list of 5 or more problems you would like to fix in the world today. RANK the problems with #1 being the most crucial problem our society faces. WRITE a few sentences – what are possible ways these problems could be solved? Do laws need to be passed? Would the structure of society have to change?

5 Part II- Brainstorm Rules for a new Society
NOW, pretend you and about 1,000 of your neighbors have been transported to an area with ample food and water, but otherwise totally cut off from the rest of the world. You have no way to contact the rest of the world and need to make some rules for your new society. Individually, think of 2-3 basic rules you feel are necessary for the success of a thousand people living together. The rules can be political, social or economic. List the rules you came up with on Assignment #1 Be ready to defend your rules. Remember, you want to a society where people would like to live. POLITICAL RULES: How are laws created and enforced? SOCIAL RULES: What roles will different groups of people (ex: age, gender, race, religion, level of wealth) play in the society? ECONOMIC RULES: How will the distribution of land, water and energy be decided?

6 Be ready to share & explain your Rule Book with the class tomorrow
Part II- Group Rules Creation You will work on this in your group of four. As a group, you should discuss the various political, social and economic ideas you each came up with and come to consensus (consensus means most of group members agree) on rules. After group discussion, EACH person should add the following to Assignment #1 ON THE BACK SIDE OF YOUR PAPER: Names of all group members List of Government, Social & Economic Rules all agreed upon. GOVERNMENT RULES: How are laws created and enforced? SOCIAL RULES: What roles will different groups of people (ex: age, gender, race, religion, level of wealth) play in the society? ECONOMIC RULES: How will the distribution of land, water and energy be decided? Be ready to share & explain your Rule Book with the class tomorrow

7 Part III - Individual Reflection
