1 CREATING A SOCIETY ACTIVITY Consider what we discussed yesterday regarding how the study of history focuses not just on facts, but - understanding different perspectives and having empathy (Gandhi quote!) - making connections from history to our own lives - applying the lessons of history to find ways to make our society a better place The following activity will ask you to think of what kind of society you would like to live in. This is your opportunity to make right what you think is wrong with society – to create a place where you want to live! However, you may also find out that that your peers may have a different ideas than you. LABEL A PIECE OF BINDER PAPER: ASSIGNMENT #1: CREATING A SOCIETY

2 Part I- Brainstorm Rules for a Society ► Individually, think of 2-3 basic political, social and economic rules (6-10 total) you feel are necessary for the success of a large group (several thousand) of people living together. ► List the rules you come up with on Assignment #1 in the three categories listed below. ► Be ready to defend your rules. Remember, you want to a society where people would like to live. GOVERNMENT RULES: How are laws created and enforced? SOCIAL RULES: What roles will different groups of people (ex: age, gender, race, religion, level of wealth) play in the society? ECONOMIC RULES: How will the distribution of land, water and energy be decided?

3 Part II- Group Rules Creation ► You will work on this in your group of four. ► As a group, you should discuss the various political, social and economic ideas you each came up with and come to consensus (consensus means most of group members agree) on rules. ECONOMIC RULES: How will the distribution of land, water and energy be decided? Be ready to share & explain your Rule Book with the class tomorrow

4 Part III - Individual Reflection After class sharing & discussion, answer these reflection questions in complete and thoughtful sentences : 1) Was the process of coming to agreement on rules easy or difficult for your group? Why? 2)Were the rules created by various groups mainly similar or mainly different? Why? 3) Explain what you think the point of this activity was.
