11 Types of Biometrics Fingerprint Facial Recognition Iris Recognition
Palm Recognition DNA Matching

12 Technologies in COSEC: Biometrics
Fingerprint Palm Vein recognition

13 Non-biometric RFID Card Pin

14 Why Biometrics? Biometric is the technology of measuring and analyzing biological data. Authenticates user based on verification. Authentication by biometric credentials is very common in public and corporate security systems. It increases security - Provides a convenient and additional tier of security. Eliminates problems caused by lost IDs or forgotten passwords by using physiological attributes. For e.g. Prevent unauthorized use of lost, stolen or "borrowed" ID cards.

15 How fingerprints work? COSEC Includes Fingerprint and Palm Vein Pattern technology. A fingerprint pattern is comprised of sequence of Ridges and Valleys. The Dark line in a fingerprint image is called Ridges which absorbs the light. The Valleys are the areas between the Ridges which reflects the light. Ridges Valleys

16 Scanners Optical Scanner
Optical scanner used to capture fingerprint image. The ridges absorb the light, so they appear dark and valleys reflect the light so, they appear bright. The CCD generates inverted image of the finger according to the light intensity and generates an analog signal.

17 Optical Scanner basic

18 2. Capacitive Scanner Capacitor is composed of 2D array of micro capacitor plates embedded in a Silicon chip In capacitor Scanner, one plate is available on sensor while second plate is finger skin itself Electrical charges are created between the finger surface and the silicon plates The distance variation of ridges and valleys with respect to plates leads to distinguished pattern

19 Capacitive Scanner basic

20 Optical vs Capacitive scanner
Accuracy is less for solid state sensors due to limitation in sensing area. Due to direct contact of solid state surface with finger; its more prone to mechanical damages/electrostatic charges. Adjustment in electrical parameters, will be reliable for the non ideal skin conditions, so solid state scan is better. Moreover, solid state scanner needs a three dimensional surface and so cannot be deceived by a photograph/printed images.

21 Palm Vein Technology Palm Vein utilizes blood vessel pattern as an identifying factor. More secured, as veins are internal, so cannot be duplicated. Palm has more complicated, broader and unique vascular pattern. It’s a contact less and hygienic technique that will work out even if the hands are dirty or wet.

22 COSEC door controller uses infrared sensor to capture palm vein images. An individual's vein pattern image is captured by reflection and illumination with near infrared rays. Veins contain deoxidized hemoglobin, an iron-containing pigment in the blood that passed oxygen through the body. These pigments absorb the near-infrared light and reduce the reflection rate causing the veins to appear as a black pattern.

23 Diagrammatic representation

24 Block Diagram Sensor reads the pattern on the finger/Palm vein surface. Analog to Digital converter converts analog reading into the digital format. Interface module is responsible for communicating with the external device.

25 Radio Frequency Identification
It is radio - frequency electromagnetic field, used to transfer data from source to destination. The Reader sends out radio signals, and the card responds with a signal to identify itself. The Reader converts radio waves returned from the tag in to data. The data are sent to an information processing system (Host or Processing computer) for identification. System grant or deny access to user based on the information received.

30 Stages of Operation

31 COSEC Modules Matrix COSEC provides centralized management and control of the entire system. It gives opportunity to access all the time-attendance information from anywhere at any time. Matrix COSEC has modular and scalable architecture which offers solution to all types of organization. Time-Attendance Module (TAM), Visitor Management Module (VMM), Employee Self Service Module (ESS), e-Canteen Management Module (CMM), Roster Management Module (RSM) and Contract Worker Management Module (CWM) depending on the requirement of the organization.
